Hello,

I am 24 years old, I have never taken birth control before and I have always said that I never would. Well, I had been having very bad cramps and severe bleeding during my period. My period only lasts for 5 (6days tops). I visited my gyn and she started me on Yaz. I took a pill on the first day of my period and I have only taken 4 pills total. I quit using the pill because I was not feeling myself. I was in a state of severe depression, throwing up and losing hair like crazy. I literally spent 2 days in bed because I was so depressed. That is not me, I am a very upbeat person and happy all of the time. I quit taking my pill and I feel back to myself again but my period has lasted 12 days now, I called my gyn and didn't get any forward answers. I just want to know how long I can expect my period top last. I know that hormones in the pills react but I dindn't think that after 4 pills that it would be this bad. I have been 8 days without a pill now and I am still menstruating. What should I do?

OOh thats a weird situation for me. Ive never heard of any having such a bad reaction so soon. There are different types of pills out there you can try. Trial and error. I was taking estro step after my son was born and experienced no side affects whatsover other then the fact it cleared my face up. I was on tri nessa here and experienced massive headaches, i just now switched to loestrin 28 havent started those yet those have low progesterone wich should make me not get headaches now. Maybe get on a lo dose pill

You are correct. The reason that you are still bleeding is because of the hormones in the pill. Whenever you start and then abruptly stop (even after a short amount of time) it will mess up your cycle for anywhere from a few days to months. Did you discuss with your doctor the side effects that you were experiencing? They seem to be severe for only being on the pill that long. Normally it would take a few weeks to experience the things that you described. There are many options other than the pill that can alleviate your problems during your period. Everyone is different and sometimes it is very hit and miss in finding the correct birth control. Sorry that you had such a negative experience, but they are not all bad. I hope you are feeling better soon!

Thank you so much for your reply. I have tried calling my gyn but she hasn't returned my call yet. Do you really think that it will last for months eventhough I have only taken it 4 days?

Whenever you stop hormonal birth control before the cycle is over, it is much more severe than if you had completed the cycle and just not continued. I apologize because my earlier explanation was not clear. When I said that it could take months, I did not mean that it could take months to stop bleeding. I meant that it could take months for you to get back on a regular schedule (if you were regular before). You will probably stop bleeding in a few days. However, you should not expect for it to be another 28 days (or whatever is normal for you) before you begin to bleed agian. It may take a few months before you can count on that. But don't be disappointed. This may not happen to you. As I have said before, it is different for everyone.

I would definitely continue to try to contact your doctor. There are thousands of pills as well as the patch and ring that may be more appropriate for you. (I would definitely not suggest that you consider the shot)

You have been very helpful! I thank you so much! I knew that I should have never taken birth control in the first place. I always said that I wouldn't because it screws with your body. My mistake, at least I know now. Hopefully I will stop bleeding soon. This is driving me crazy. I didn't think that taking 4 pills would mess me up this bad. I think that my doctor should have taken onto consideration that I have never been on the pill before and she should have put on something not so high in hormones. If this lasts much longer do you know of any medications that would help it stop? I don't want to be irregular. I know this sounds stupid, but I am getting married in May and I had planned our honeymoon around my monthly! If you don't mind me asking, what do you take?

Let me know how the Loestrin works for you. If you don't mind.

Unfortunately, there is no medication that will stop you from bleeding, unless you go back on birth control. I know that you have had a bad experience, but I think that you may want to think about it. I understand about scheduling big events around your monthly. The best suggestion that I have is to have your doctor write you a prescription for some low dose birth control. Make sure that the birth control she prescribes you is a monophasic *not* a triphasic. (With monophasic you do not have to take the week of placebo pills. So if you have something important you can skip bleeding all together that month Wink ) You may want to consider doing this until after your wedding and then discontinuing use if you are still not happy with the side effects. I personally was on a birth control called Levlite (aviane is the generic) it has the lowest dose of hormones that is not considered a minipill.

Congratulations on getting married! I hope everything works out by then!
