It is recommended that people who really
think they might have HIV test again if
they tested negative the first time. Some
people test negative because it is too
soon for the HIV to show up. That's the
most common reason for false negatives.
Wait a few more weeks and test again just
for good measure.
Never base it on symptoms. Symptoms can
develop very soon after infection, but
they often don't. There are a wide
variety of symptoms that people with HIV
may have because of other infections.
Many people have no symptoms at all when
they test positive for HIV. Other people
get cold or flu-like symptoms, but those
are also symptoms of many other things.
Tests are the only thing that can really
tell you. Let your doctor know about any
symptoms you are having, but other than
that, don't get too worked up about
symptoms. They are too varied. You can't
make a diagnosis of HIV based on symptoms.
