Hey, I have to have an EEG done and i have noticed my seizures tend to come when i havnt had enough sleep, We have told the doc that, we though he would have wanted a sleep deprived EEG but no just a normal one. Anyway He said if this EEG comes back normal he dosent want to see me again. and I dont want to be sent home thinking well the EEG could have been a odd one a keep worrying that i still have it.

So what i am going to do (sorry about the long message Confused ) i am going to not get enough sleep the night before.

Luke

You should have a sleep study done, preferrably from a board certified sleep specialist, who specializes in neorology. I have grand mals in my sleep, and have been on dilantin for years. I'm a heavy snorer (female!) , and had a sleep study done 10 years back that was inconclusive, so I tried to ignore my symptoms until I was falling asleep everytime I sat down. I have had many eegs in the past, all normal. I finally had another sleep study done, and found out I was waking up 83 times an hour, due to stopping breathing at night. Since I've started CPAP ( a machine you sleep with that forces air into your throat and keeps your airway open ) I have not had any grandmals, and have greatly reduced the number of "stare out " seizures I was having. I have a machine that tells me how many apneas I have an hour, and when the number gets a bit high, I may have a small seizure or two. Many people who have nighttime seizures have them because of sleep apnea. The oxygen in their blood gets too low , and causes the seizure. The only way to tell this is going on for sure is to have a sleep study done. By the way, you don't have to be overweight, or snore heavily to have it. I still use the dilantin, but I hope once my apnea gets controlled I can get off of it or at least cut down. Good luck. Virginia

Eeg Sleep Deprived
if i were you i would find another doctor as in a second opinion if i were you. just to be safe. you can always ask your family doctor if you have one to refer you to someone else if it is an insurance thing. Cause if you are having them and you are noticing them then there is a problem that needs to be addressed. i would switch doctors.

Hello
Sleep deprived eeg, I have had 2. First one was when i started having seizures, as i had a normal eeg, but it showed stress or something weird in the 15th-17th electrodes, i dont know what that means. But anyway, after that a few months i still was having grand mal seizures, so another neurologist sent me for a sleep eeg. I had to stay awake all night, i was not aloud to have any coffee, or drinks like coke. It was so hard to stay awake alone. But the next day i had to go to the hospital and have the sleep eeg. they do this type of eeg because they want you to fall asleep when its beeing done, so they can see how your brain patterns are when you are at rest. It didnt show anything. But last yr i went in to hospital for a veeg for 4 days, and i had to stay awake all night and the nurses helped keep me awake. and having eegs for 4 days extensive.
I think maybe you should get a veeg done.

I have had both awake and asleep EEG's and all the way up to a year ago it was always that the awake was normal and the asleep one showed abnormalities. Last year both showed no abnormalities though. I would say that you should make your doctor order both... that was what I had to do last year.

Get a second opinion!!
I just had a sleep deprived eeg....they had me go to sleep two hours later than normal and get up two hours earlier than normal. This is a way to stress the brain and see if that type of stress can initiate a seizure. The other thing they may do is have you hyperventilate and do the whole strobe light thing (which is slightly uncomfortable, that in itself causes anxiety). I think it is important that you push for this test so you understand what is going on. Good luck...this is hard
