Q: Lower right abdominal pain: Appendicitis?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 18th, 2007
I have been having lower right abdomen pain for over 6 weeks, 2 weeks into it I went to the ER, they did physical exam and blood work. Told me to follow up with my DR. Went to my physician 3 days later, he wanted sonogram and colonoscopy. He thinks IBS. The pelvic sonogram only showed a large area of gas built up in the area my pain is in.

I'm still awaiting the results of colonoscopy and sonogram.

My question is would this be my appendix? The pain is just discomfort scale from 1-10 maybe a 1 or 2. What does this sound like to you?

Thank you
Lisa

Appendix inflammation (appendicitis) is usually much more painful than simple abdominal discomfort. Unfortunately, all the diagnostic procedures you’ve done (an ultrasound, colonoscopy) can neither prove nor deny appendicitis. Diagnosis of acute appendicitis is clinical in nature and is made according to the symptoms and signs shown by the person experiencing the pain. Therefore, diagnosis of appendicitis remains very uncertain because many other abdominal disorders manifest the same symptoms (abdominal pain, temperature, vomiting, nausea etc.). Sometimes even healthy appendices are surgically removed or something else is found during the operation because of an incorrect diagnosis of acute appendicitis.
IBS can manifest with many symptoms including abdominal pain or discomfort.
You can wait until all medical reports are completed before thinking about diagnosis and treatment of the condition.
