Q: Neurological disorder or anxiety?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on March 18th, 2007
For the last three years I have been experiencing a heavy sensation in my left arm and left leg. Sometimes I drag my left foot. My left hand draws so bad at times it feels like I could crush a steal ball. My tongue always feels cool along with a feeling of being shocked. My face even tingles. I am tired all the time, I can't keep up with my daily chores, a few hours after I wake up I have to take a nap. I do not sleep well at night. I have told the doctor, he says it is anxiety. I know my body, there is something else that is going on. Please help me if you can, this is really getting to me. Thank You, Teresa

You can request a neurological examination to investigate whether the “dragging left foot and hand” is due to muscle, nerve failure or depression. A “cool” and “shocked” feeling from the tongue, in addition to face “tingles” could be inexplicable symptoms that may be due to anxiety. Anxiety and/or depression can cause many strange symptoms that appear to be symptoms of other disease... but in fact, there is nothing organic present. Fatigue and sleepiness are very common symptoms of depression. To confirm depression as a reason for your symptoms you can request a neurological examination and some standard blood analyses first to exclufe neurological dysfunction. If everything is OK and neurological diseases are excluded, you can ask help from a mental health doctor.
