Well I have pneumonia and have had a bad cough. I have taken all my cough medicine which was promethazine with codeine and my cough is continuing. I have another bottle but it expired september 1, 2006. Is this ok to take and what possible effects can expired medicine have? Does medicine truly expire? I have found very conflicting information online and any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you

sorry to any of you that have noticed but i have posted this multiple places in the past few days because i desprately need an anwser and my doctor is out of town till monday. i figured this would be a good place

do not take expired meds. especially ones that have been expired for 6 months! why is it still even in the house??

first off it will not be strong anymore, secondly it can be toxic. cough medicine is not reccomened for pneumonia anyway. your doc should have prescribed you some sort of med with steroids.

"Liquid or suspension medications. These don't retain their potency nearly as well as solid medications, so stick to the expiration date on the package. "
