Q: Thumb Sucking Question

Okay, for mommies of thumb suckers (or people who know a thumb sucker)...

Alyvia likes to grab/hold/touch things with her fingers while she's sucking her thumb. The fingers on the same hand as her thumb, I mean. I was wondering...

a. what that is (is there a name for it?)

and...

b. does your thumb sucker do it too?

Confused

My ex-best friend used to suck her thumb, and she'd play with a hair scrunchie in the same hand whilst she did it. I think it's common to fiddle with something while thumb sucking.. it's a comfort thing. I guess it's kinda like my babyish habit, only I don't suck my thumb..

my cousin, one of the triplets has had a blankie since she's been real little, and she holds a corner of te blanket up to her mouth and or nose while she sucks her thumb, and it always had to be the same corner. now that she's older the blanket was ratted and so tey tore off that corner and sewed it onto another one lol crazy.

Hi
Almost 50 years ago I had a blanket and I sucked my thumb and did the exact thing with the corner...Yes, it is a COMFORT thing! Every year my "blanket" got smaller and smaller and eventually "Santa"took it. My Mother gave me my piece of "blanket" back a couple years ago. It still has the same "smell" it use to have. My nephew sucks his thumb and has to have his fingers entertwined (same hand as the sucking finger) around his "rag" ! Not really sure if this has a name. I did have to wear braces because of the thumb sucking Crying or Very sad ..........

Okay, thanks ladies. I always knew she did it, but I didn't really stop and think about it until today. I was nursing her while I was reading threads on here, and my nipple started to hurt! So I look down and she's sucking her thumb and scratching at my nipple with her fingers. Silly girl. I took the boob away from her if she was going to play. Laughing but it occured to me that she's really doing that thing now with her fingers a lot.

She likes to grab a handful of my hair sometimes too. Which is gross, because my hair is really long and some of it gets all slobbery. Neutral

My little sister got a bunny on her first easter she was about 6 months old and she started to keep it at her side...she sucks her thumb and holds his ears in her hand up against her nose. now if she cant' smell the ears (which smell really nasty. btw) or if they don't smell right.....she freaks out. lol she will cry and throw him...then she will feel bad and run and get him and kiss him. lol it's darling....but i wont' let amelia play with him because of all the germs....

My friend .karen's lil girl was the *same* way, with her "bunny"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good .god did it stink!!! Puuuuu-weeee!!!!

She couldn't be away from it for no longer than like 2 seconds!!

Well about 2 months ago .karen accidentally lost it (for real lost it) and tore her house apart trying to find it!!!! She didn't know what she was gonna do.

She tried to subsititute it with others, and she was like "nooo mom, I want .bunny!!(in this really whiney voice)"

She called me frantic and I told her that "it's a sign. this *must* be the time you were meant to take it from her. SHe's a big girl now, she'll be *fine*!"

And sure enough, 3 days passed, and she was allll better!!

I hate it when my bunny's been washed. It takes a couple of weeks to get him back to normal. Everyone else thinks my bunny and dat (my blanket.. when I was little I'd point to it and say "I want dat" instead of "that" and the name just stuck) smell weird, but it's normal to me! I actually genuinely freak out if I lose them. Luckily .Jonny thinks it's "cute" Laughing

.Adriana does that too. She normally only sucked it when she was tired. But now, it's like if she finds a blanket, or a stuffed animal she sucks her thumb. She also does that thing like playing with something in the same hand as she sucks her thumb

it probably isn't.

Once a thumb sucker, always a thumb sucker.

Oni didn't want to take her noonie, but I was *determined*, and now she has no interest in her thumb (except to chew on it when she's teething).

I was an avid thumb sucker till the 3rd grade. My mom tried this nasty ass stuff that was clear.
One night, while she was sleeping, I poured it out and replaced it with water. ANd kep on a suckin'!

Not all kids end up with problems with their teeth. Babies and toddlers that suck their thumb are able to self soothe. You never spend precious time looking for their binky either

I know...I have gorgeous teeth, but I'm hella lucky. I could have easily been buck toothed. WIthout braces.

You do have nice teeth.

All of my nephews were thumb suckers and none of them grew up to look like beavers

It has to do with if they are pushing their thumb against the teeth or not.

I've already decided to begin actively breaking her habit when she turns 1. Before she was born I had decided to break her of her paci habit by then, so .i'm going to start with her thumb at that age too. I don't want to wait a few years and see if she loses interest on her own - I can't take that chance. I want to start doing it sooner so she won't remember it as much. Hopefully it won't be as hard as it would be if I waited until she was 3.

Chuy weirdo sucks the middle and ring fingers of his right hand. I was told that it was better than sucking his thumb and that he shouldn't have any dental issues because of it.

Babies suck their thumbs to cope with and process emotions and sometimes these emotions can be very over whelming. They only do it til they learn how to properly cope with emotions and "breaking" that "habit" could harm them more psychologically then having their teeth messed up. I've been sucking my thumb and playing with my hair since I was just a baby, and because my mom tried to get me to break that habit it caused unnecessary stress so I wound up becoming dependent on it. Now I'm sure I could break the habit I don't do it much anymore but I did do it when I was in school and such. Also my teeth aren't messed up one bit. They look normal and I don't have an over bite or anything like that either.
P.s I realize this thread is old but I posted anyway to help anyone looking for help on the same topic. Also if anyone is wondering how I know any of that it's because 1: I study psychology, and 2: I learned from personal experience. Very Happy
