Good afternoon chaps.

I suffered from a very tight foreskin for years, and in fact tore the frenulum on a couple of occasions, until my GP finally referred me to have the snip on the NHS.

So, last Tuesday, having shown my Johnson to a vast number of people in the preceding months, had my operation postponed twice, and built up a healthy dread of the impending operation, I went along to the Day Surgery Unit at my local hospital and had the job done.

The wound was wrapped in gauze and surgical bandages when I woke up, and the doctor advised me to leave these on until the next day, when I was to run myself a salty bath and sit in it for half an hour. That I duly did, and the dressing came off in the warm water to reveal the full extent of the butchery that had taken place. Not pretty - something like Frankenstein's cousin.

The doctor advised me to redress the wound after this daily bathing ritual, for the first week or so. All well.

The problem only began when my little fellow became sufficiently well for me to begin to have erections during the night again. Not only was this excruciatingly painful, waking me up several times every night, but I also lost two of the dissolvable stitches that been put into the wound to help the two edges of skin bind together.

I went back to the hospital and saw a consultant urologist who told me that this would not be a problem, that the wound would heal whether or not the two stitches in question had fallen out. I then had my follow up operation with my GP, who also said that the wound was healing OK and that the missing stitches were not a cause for concern.

However...

Ten days after the operation, the wound is still bleeding (albeit only sporadically), mostl obviously from the area where the two stitches had fallen out. If the skin is pulled back at all, I have the impression that there is nothing holding the skin together. This is in sharp contrast to the other side of the wound, where the two edges have joined together nicely.

As well as this, there is still swelling just underneath the line of the wound. I am under no illusions as to the trauma that my poor willy must have been put through in this process, but the swelling is very uneven, (again, mostly on the side of the penis where the two stitches fell out).

Can anyone who has had the operation or knows anything about post operation recovery set my mind at ease?

Thanks very much,

Alex

I have had alot of surgeries (not the one you had though) and lopsided swelling, or 'gaps' in the skin are normal. Where the stitches came out it will most likely just turn to scar tissue. Some woulds ooze for a long time. I had a vasectomy and my stitches broke, had a gaping hole that oozed for 5 weeks. Hurt like hell but eventually healed. The key is to get it to clot. Try a guaze pad on it-but don't remove it for several days. If you take it off and on, it will tear the clot loose and you'll start over.

Thanks for your reply blulyneguy.

It's difficult to know whether or not I'm just being a hypochondriac with this, but it is very hard not to worry about something so, er, close to all of our hearts! I have been fortunate enough not to have had much surgery in my life, so I guess it's partly just that I don't have much of a field of reference.

I've actually stopped dressing the wound now, and am just applying vaseline to the scar line to reduce friction with my clothes - hopefully things will keep improving!

Yeah, our area is very sensitive. The clothing rubbing it- I know the feeling. I wouldn't use veseline on it though. That will keep it soft- you want to dry it out so it heals. Just put some antibiotic ointment on it and some gauze- keep it on as long as you can. Do not let it rub on your clothes- it will take alot longer to heal.

I'd advise against vaseline as well, but because it traps bacteria and can cause infections. An antibacterial ointment or something your doctor suggests would be better.

I would also think it's not good to keep it wrapped for days without changing. There is a reason you're supposed to change bandages often, because of infection. Infections will only make the healing slower and less complete with likelier chances of scars. If sticking is a problem then perhaps the ointment would help as well gauze that is specially designed to be non-sticking.

You didn't mention infection, but it's always good to avoid them so you could take internal measures. Such as avoiding alcohol and sugar. Garlic, Vitamin C, Zinc, Echinacea, Elderberry, Colloidal Silver, Oregano Oil and Probiotic supplements are all things that would increase immunity and fight infection. Not saying you have to take them all, just mentioning some options.

Thanks for your reply.

I'm currently using the vaseline because I've been told by all of the doctors I've seen (and the post op literature that they gave me) that this was the best course of action - the latter even advising that it will help the wound to heal, as well as reducing chafing against clothes... A couple of other information sites on the internet recommend similar measures, and discourage use of antiseptic! Rolling Eyes

I've stopped dressing the wound too, again on doc's advice.

hi,

Vaseline is fine to use. I had both of my boys circumcised and I was told to use vaseline on them too.

Hope you are feeling o.k.

Feeling a lot better thanks Christina.

How old were your boys when you had them done?

Post Circumcision

Hey Alex,

I had my boys circumcised when thet were little. My son who is now 3 was done when he was about 3 weeks old. He had the bell method, where the Dr. put a plastic thing under the skin on the head of his penis, and then a string was tied around the foreskin until the skin fell off. It looked really ugly and painful. My last baby who is about 4 months old was done when he was about 3 1/2 weeks. The Dr. used a scalpul and cut the foreskin off. My son was supposedly numb for a couple of hours from the anesthesia and he was fine afterwards. Not any more cranky or anything. The area looked red and swollen, but not too bad compared to my first son. My husband was in the room both times, but I wanted no part of it. Had I been a single mother I probably wouldn't have had it done, but my husband is circumcised so he really wanted his kids to be too. I just hate when my kids are upset or in pain, so for me it was really hard.

Good luck to you,

Christina

Why on earth did you have your sons' penises mutilated beyond repair on the arrogant whim of your husband? Shouldn't a drastic decision like this be made by your sons, only your sons, when they are old enough to decide for themselves? They will now never know the overwhelming benefits of a part of their anatomy that nature has given them for good reason.

Alright....let's not have this arguement. It is about personal choice. By the time children are old enough to make that decision, it turns into a 'large' operation instead of a 'minor' one. This is the 'advice' area, .N.O.T the opinions section. This arguement can be avoided altogether by just letting it go. Just my 2 cents.....

Precisely! The personal choice has been denied to the children! It is not an opinion it is a fact. However large or small the operation is has nothing to do with it; the only people who can decide are the boys themselves.

Well for what it's worth, I wish my parents had had me circumcised when I was a baby. It would have saved me a whole lot of trouble, psycho sexual counselling to get over the trauma of tearing my frenulum three times, and other assorted ills. Don't be so arrogant as to tell other people what to do - live your own life.

For those of you that disagree with the choice that was made to have my kids circumcised, to hell with you. I'm not responding to negativity or immature remarks after this post. I'm quite happy with the choice my husband and I made. I've researched the pros/cons and feel educated in my choice.

Alex, I hope I helped some, feel free to PM me if you need/want to. I hope this topic doesn't turn ugly and get locked because I know that you came here looking for answers. Unfortunately this is just one of those topics that people feel strongly about and can't be persuaded otherwise, myself included.

Well, MY point is that having the ability to choose would have been infinitely less attractive a proposition in my case than having been circumcised at birth, and has condemned me to all that I've had to go through up until today. I would rather have never had to choose, but you don't understand as you haven't lived through what other people have (I am far from being alone in having suffered from this kind of problem). Again, leave out the petty insults and bring your own kids up the way you feel they should be brought up.
