Q: Expired Promethazine With Codeine

well i have pneumonia and have had a bad cough. i have taken all my cough medicine which was promethazine with codeine and my cough is continuing. i have another bottle but it expired september 1, 2006. Is this ok to take and what possible effects can expired medicine have? does medicine truly expire? i have found very conflicting information online and any help is greatly appreciated. thank you

Ummmm normally i would say go for it but in this case because it's a narcotic, i wouldn't. You can always call your doctor and ask them if it's ok before you self-prescribe. I think that is why they put a experation date on it....i googled it and really coldn't find anything about the experation date.

so in this case i would call your health care provider.

You have 6 months from the expired date, provided that the medication was stored properly (explained on the bottle or in package insert).
