Q: Feeling Weird

Hey I'm around 13.
I live in Hong Kong, weigh over 100 (I'm the really fat type though)
Recently the middle part of my chest ached. Then one afternoon I drank some normal coffee ( I don't usually drink them, and this is not the really strong kind of coffee ), and my heart beated quick that night. I e-mailed my doctor and told him my symtoms, he said it might be palpitations, which is a side effect of caffeine. So I rested and around 2 weeks later, it got a bit better. But now I'm feeling weird; my head sometimes hurt, mostly only for a few seconds or minutes, my muscles and bones hurt a little, on my neck and arm (left mostly) on the joint area, as in it is sore. My chest also feels tight. I talked to my dad and he told me it's the way I play computer; I've been playing computer in the following position for around 2 years: My keyboard is either in front of me, or on my right hand side, and my screen is located on the right side, it never moved. Every time I play computer I have to twist my neck a little to get a good view of the screen. It's not the exactly right, but I have to turn my head a little to the right. My dad say this stretches my chest muscles which makes it hurt. And since it's tight, my blood might not be flowing well, which causes other places to hurt. He told me to stop playing on that computer for a while, or at least change the position. It helped and I feel a bit better. Any other reasons why I am feeling this? My mom says it might be because my bones are stretching since I'm growing.

I'm worried, can someone help?

Thanks,
Jeremy

as for the palpatations, i get them quite regularly, and in most people they are completely harmless. it feels scary when it happens, but i have had tests and been told it is nothing for me to worry about. as you say, yours were probably caused by the caffeine. i find mine come on when i drink alcohol. certain things seem to trigger it. but you shouldn't be alarmed unless it happens really regularly, or you feel faint or out of breath when it happens. if this occurs you should get it checked out to be safe.

as for the pains, i very much doubt it's bad blood flow, and i know for a fact growing can't make your bones hurt! i can't tell you what that is, though. the pains could be caused by a number of things, sleeping or sitting awkwardly...? try giving it a few days and see if you feel better then. and if not, give your doctor a call.

Help With Both of Your Problems I Hope
As for the computer I agree 100%. There's something called carpal tunnel synmdrome that casues all kinds of aching muscles and joints in the hands and arms and perhaps that can extend to other body parts. It comes form sitting in one position all day and doing repetative motion like playing the piano or typing on a key board. The only help assid from surgery that i can think of is taking good long breaks at least 30 minutes and lots of strecthing and excerices to keep the blood flowingf and muscles loose. Yoga or aerobics or bike riding along with good strecthing is vital. Check out the Navy Seal workout book it's full of great exercies.

As for the racing heart read my story...

I began getting panic type symptoms around age 32 including racing heart, irregular heartbeat, shotness of breath, could not sleep at all.

I was afraid to lift anything exercise, take a walk or do anything that would set off my symptoms. I was 32- I thought I was dying! While I was diagnosed with Mitral Valve Prolapse (supposedly) and put on medication to control heart rhythm, I continued to have episodes almost daily! I was in an out of emergency rooms at least once a week.

Finally my wife mentioned cutting out caffeine completely from my diet which I thought I had done already. She reminded me that I drink quite a bit of decaf coffee and Iced tea and I replied but it’s decaf? Come to learn all decaf is not the same. After cutting out the decaf stuff for only a day or two I began sleeping like a baby and feeling like I was 15 years younger!

I'd also read that taking a Calcium Magnesium Zinc plus a Vitamin B complex supplement once a day helps keep teh nervous system in balance. With the combination of the supplements and zero caffeine I have gotten rid of 99% of my symptoms.

I fgured, cutting out the caffeine and the decaf will never hurt you anyway and a supplement- ask your doctor but I don’t think a moderate amount of a vitamin supplement can hurt you either…. Best of Luck. I’d love to hear back and see if it helped you….

Palpitations
I have panic attacks which include palpiations, I have done much research on the internet about the subject. One of the best pieces of advice I read was if you don't have good posture your body presses down on your heart and lungs and makes it harder for the blood to flow properly. When you are on the computer, try holding yourself upright, shoulders back strong and tall, this has helped my palpitations alot. Also, stay away from caffiene and try to cut sugar and carbs down in your diet. Eat fresh, healthy foods such as chicken, fish, vegetables. Try to stay away from fast food if possible, it is loaded with saturated fat and is so unhealthy. I would also recommend exercise. You are too young to be worried about your weight, but young enough to take care of it before it becomes a problem for you. Trust me, I'm overweight and wish I had started getting healthy years ago.
Take Care.
