I have to have one done b/c, according to my dentist, when you have a crown put on, there is a 1 in 10 chance you will need a root canal. I got the crown about 3 years ago on the 2nd to last bottom tooth on the left side.

RC's have been considered major; one of my friends had one about 7 years ago and said it was painful. My mom had one in the last 5 years and said there was no problem; however she also had them over 15 years ago and she said those were excruciating!
And anyone I talk to who hasn't had one is like 'yeah, not to scare you but I hear that that is a big ordeal'... Great.

My dentist (who referred me to the endodontist) said it wouldn't hurt.
But I'm still really scared.

I take Prozac and Xanax (have for 15 years) for depression and panic, though those have gotten better. So even when I have a cavity filled, I get a different local numbing shot then everyone else...one that is weaker, which results in my having to have about 3 shots every time to be numb enough...because they'd be drilling away and all the sudden I'd feel it and we'd have to stop and I'd get another shot.

So as you might imagine, I am freaked out about this! I am looking for encouragement, as I've read RC's can go bad or result in loss of the tooth. And of course I'm most afraid of the pain. Just thinking of someone scraping at a NERVE freaks me out.

So anyone that can help please do!

Thanks

Please, anyone!
Also, do they use 'laughing gas'? B/c I cannot tolerate it.

Root Canal

I had one done and I was nervous but the dentist knew about it and I remember feeling dizzy from the anxiety and he sent me to go eat breakfast before and go back after. He froze me, it went well, and there was no pain. I closed my eyes and focused my mind on something else and it helped me relax. Make sure the dentist knows you are nervous but take my advice and try not to be.

local anasthesia. it's a needle. It will be okay please trust me!! If it makes you feel better, I had A LOT of problems with my teeths. Pain, infections root canals, fillings...you name it. Heck I know the dentist's office # by heart now and they know me by my first name! On Jan 24th, I had to go get all my teeth pulled!!! And I had to go again yesterday to get a few more pieces out. I was put to sleep both times and other then looking funny until I get my teeth back, I have no regrets.

I suffer from depression too and I didn't sleep a lot the few nights before both surgeries but I have to say that I would have done it a long time ago if I knew it was gonna be this way. Fact is, no one likes dentists or doctors. Just make sure you tell your dentist how nervous you are, they may even give you a sedative before the treatment so that you are relaxed but it does not hurt!!! The most painfull part is the needle and that is not any worst than a flu shot or a blood test so talk to him first maybe even go for a consult to discuss the situation with your dentist and you won't be so nervous knowing your just going there to "talk" first and you will be more prepared and know what to expect when you do go in for it but my advice, get it done!! I had a tooth infection that made me require root canal and I was so scared I waited until the pain was too much to bare and after the treatment I felt so much better pain was gone! you better do it now than wait and risk acute pain. If you need to talk again, I sign on regularly and I will look out for you. Keep us posted. Cheers

Thank you so much again. I'm so sorry about your predicament. All your teeth pulled? Wow. I wish you lots of luck. Thanks for the reassuring.

I just got surprised with a root canal when I went to the dentist yesterday. I was really freaking out! I hadn't been in awhile so knew something like this might be coming. I didn't think they would do it the same day I went in for a check up though.

I am more scared of the dentist than anything. I am nervous and can't sleep for days leading up to it. I was shaking when she said I needed a root canal and that she was just going to do it while I was there.

Like I said, that was yesterday morning. It actually didn't hurt at all. It is sore today, but nothing unmanageable. I went to work today, slept fine last night. I even have been able to eat without any trouble, as long as I do it on the other side. I was just told to take Ibuprofen to help with pain and it has been working great.

The most uncomfortable part is when they are actually in there drilling and scraping. I had Novacaine but even when it wore off I didn't hurt too bad - just a dull ache.

Hope this helps!

Thanks again.
I had it done about a month ago and I am still feeling pain. So I am going in today. I swear! It figures I'd have an unsuccessful root canal! My teeth are probably unevenly worn from chewing on one side for so d*** long!

Then I had two fillings replaced a little bit ago, as well as a perm. filling in the root canal tooth. One of the fillings hurt the whole time she was drilling. I kid you not, I got SIX shots and I could feel everything! She said that tooth was cracked...I HOPE that is the reason for the pain.
