Can taking carbatrol for epilepsy cause leukemia? I have had epilepsy since I was 15months and yesturday I went to the doctor to have my levels checked and they found something wrong with my liver. I have been on different types of medicine for epilepsy but I have been on carbatrol for about 2years. Before that I was on depakote for about 10 years. The doctor didn't want to scare me but spoke about leukemia. I am really scared

Carbatrol And Leukemia
I've taken carbatrol for 7 years now. I went to the doctor 2 weeks ago to get my levels checked and he said that my white blood cell count and my platelet count is "alarmingly low". He sent me to a hematologist/oncologist to take more blood tests. I have to say, it was a bit scary to sit in his office with all of the books sitting around like "how to eat when you have cancer" and such. I'm going back sept. 12th. I'd really like to know what happened with you dolphin25. Please give me an update.

Thanks!
Kathy

Carbatrol
Hi dolphin! I'm so happy it turned out okay for you. I am still having trouble with my white blood cells. I am at 2,300 now. I have to get off the carbatrol and will start topamax. I hope that it doesn't have many side effects. Have you heard anything about topamax?

Extremely eHealthy
Kathy97123, I am not a dr but I have heard that about carbatrol, anytime that you get a new med they generally give you a hand out with it or look it up on the computer under side effects, that is the only thing baad about using prescription meds thing can cause worse problems sometimes then what you already have.
As far as topomax, someone told me it caused her hair to fall out, more brain fog, weight loss.
A lot of the pain meds is hard on the liver but I have to have it daily with my medical situations but we are not all alike and some of us may not have any side effects at all but we haaave two choices we can take it and it might help with that particular medical situation or maybe not or not take it and suffer.
Their is also herbs and naatural supplements that I have tried that did not help me but has helped others that with some people did not have all of the side effects, you might ask your dr about that.
All the best to you!
Keep us posted on what you find out. You too dolphine25.

Carbatrol And Leukemia
Hi sandyallen!

You are right about topomax. I have been taking it for three months now instead of the carbatrol and I have lost 22 pounds. I am hoping that it is because of the topomax and not because I am sick. I will know today or tomorrow.

Thank you for your message.
