Happens After a Baby??? Posted: 02-13-04 01:11am
Ok I have a very personal and embarassing
question. I cannot believe I am going to
even ask about this, but here it goes.
Ever since the birth of my daughter in
august of 2003 I am having major bowel
movement problems. When I get the erge
to "go" I have to get to a bathroom
immediately!!!! I cannot "hold it"
anymore. I have no clue why. And ever
since I have been having like 8 bowel
movements a day. Pretty much every time
I have to urinate..I have a bm. Is
something wrong with me? Could I have
colon cancer?? Also...Most of the time
its like diareah (sp?) or very very soft,
sorry to be so gross...Just really
unsure!!

Sara
it is highly unlikely you have anything
serious.
You most likely have a mild to medium case
of irritable bowel syndrome (ibs) brought
on by the changes in your body during
pregnancy combined with possible changes
in diet and levels of stress.
Ibs is managed rather than cured oiut
right, but can be helped by diet
changes.
The following may help:
- decreasing the amount dairy products in
your diet, along with soft drink
- eating slightly unripe (greenish)
banana's
- drinking peppermint tea
- eating easily digested, but bulky foods
like rice
- avoiding too many dark green vegi's like
peas and beans
if the problem continue for an extended
period of time a trip to a
gastroenterologist maybe in order.

Hey sara,
i've had bowel problems ever since I was
in the 4th grade...Similar to ibs &
crohn's but not entirely( if u want to
know more pm me), but i've heard from many
many women that pregnancy can either get
rid of past bowel problems, or even bring
on digestive problems....I'm hoping my
pregnancy reverses mine so I don't have to
deal with it anymore..It's horrible, so
life consuming...But I know alot on this
topic, so if you ever need any info or
support, you know where to find me!
Best wishes,
nessa & peanut

I know..I should go, but its so
embarassing. Also I am constantly at the
doc....Lol I think im a hypocondriac!!!
I dunno what to do...Maybe I should just
ignore it. I mean my mom has the same
problem, except she dosent go as much as I
do. Thats why I was maybe wondering if
it happens after you deliver because it
started to her after she had my sis.

First, my daughter has ibs & hsa
recently been researching the diet
(there's a website & chat forum too)
& the advice given earlier is not
really correct, some dairy you can eat but
alot you can't, you should becareful about
alot of the carbohydrates eg, rice!!,
potato, sweet potato, breads, pasta &
also corn.
On the other hand peas, beans, etc are
fine as are all sea foods, meats (although
not processed meats as in delicatessan
stuff) most fruits are fine, although
banana causes 2 days worth of foods to
come up where my daughter is concerned.
She also is constipated definitely does
not have diarrhoea.
I had (& many women I know had) a
problem re urinating often & with no
warning after my first pregnancy but what
you're experiencing seems more like an
infection, or maybe you just need to do
some bowel exercises like with yoga to
tighten up strained & therefore
weakened bowel muscles??!!

Well I eat alot of carbs. I am not a
meat eater, I have eaten lots of carbs my
whole life. So I don't think this is
directly linked to my diet. I think
maybe it could be beacuse I had an
episiotmy also??? Maybe they cut part of
my spynchter muscel? I am going to give
it a little longer and then if not better,
seek medical attention.

With ibs everyone is different. You may
be able to eat all of the dairy that you
want and something weird like broccoli
will not sit right. Everyone is
different. What you have to do is pay
attention to what you eat. Figure out
what bothers you and what doesn't. It is
embarassing, but go to your doctor. They
gave me a prescription to take right
before I eat and now I can eat anything I
want with no problem at all. Plus after
I took it for a month and then quit, I was
fine! So, hey try it. There is no
point in living with this if you do not
have to. The pregnancy probably did
bring on ibs, or maybe just stress from
the pregnancy. Hope you feel beter!
