Q: Pap Smear Showing Abnormal Cell Growth

I have a friend who has had 4 abnormal pap smears in the last year and a half. The results were not cancerous - but show abnormal cell growth. She also had a leep test done with unsatisfactory results. She is post-menopausal and a smoker. She would like to have a hysterectomy done so there won't be any chance of it turning into cancer later, which would probably require surgery,chemo,and/or radiation. Her doctor agreed to do the hysterectomy, but her insurance company won't approve it. Has anyone had or know of a similar situation???

Thanks!!!

Hysterectomy
(subject line is a pretty much a no-brainer, eh) Rolling Eyes
anyway....Hi deb - i'm sorry to hear about all the problems your friend is going through.

What the doctor should be doing is submitting the insurance claim with a diagnosis stating that a hysterectomy is medically necessary - not an "optional" thing on your friend's part.
Maybe she can re-discuss with the doctor. He will still get paid; and she will be free of the abnormal cells and will have peace of mind; which is priceless.
I wish her well!
Keep us posted as to what's going on.
Take care - lori

Pap Smear
Hi, lori,

thanks for your reply. My friends' doctor has already talked to the doctor from the insurance company and they know all the test results and reasons for the surgery, but still won't approve the hysterectomy. How can her doctor now say that it is medically necessary and not optional? Are there other options?

Thanks!
Deb
