Q: Back Right Head Pain?

Hello, This is really bothering me and I don't know where else to turn.

I'm 20 years old, College student, I support myself and manage to get by. I eat healthy and take vitamins, and have for the past month been going to the GYM. The only supplement I have been using is Whey protein.

A week ago today actually, I was doing some Squats. I increased the weight on my 3rd set (about 10-20 pounds heavier then what I useually do). I did 6 reps and struggled to finish. On the 10th Rep I struggled to get the bar up, and strained something / popped something, I don't know. Thats what I'm hear to find out... No where else to turn at the moment.

A sharp pain in the back right of my head overwhelmed my body. For 30seconds I Could barley do anything. It was a sharp continous pain. After about 2 minutes it went away, but I was left with a huge headache.... I decided that was enough for the day and I left. This next morning I woke up and could barley move my neck (Most likley not cause by this... I think I just slept weird... but incase it has something to do with it Im writing it). My neck pain is virtaully gone, a slight pain when i turn my neck to my left shoulder.

The weird part is... Anytime I work out, that sharpe pain in the back right of my head comes back. Sometimes during the day, Ill get a slight headache also. I went to go do some pushups the other night, I did 2 sets of 50, and the pain came back. IT seem's to occure when my blood starts to pump / my heart rate increase.

This is starting to worry me now, for I have not been able to workout for a week. I don't have insurance so I have not gone to the doctor to get it examined. I'm not sure if this will go away?

Any help / suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
(Sorryn ot sure what part of forum to post this on)

That is the same reason I found this site..... I get these shrp shooting pains inthe right side of my head, they useually only last a second or 2 but the scar me and catch me off guard.... when i found this site I saw that is was really common which put my mind at ease... I am still going to go check at the doctor and get an mri but I dont have as much anxiety about it. It usually happens when i get mad or make a sudden move, like I was running up my stairs the other day. some say its from stearing at a computer or tv all day. some days it does it a lot some days not at all....Its weird. I would still go to the doctor to go get it checked out though.

Hmm
I'am a graphic / web designer. I'm looking at a computer for roughly 15hrs a day. But I have been for many years.
I know its related to when I was doing squats, for that is where the origanl pain came from. I have been told it could just be a nerve, and it will eventually stop. and so many other things. But I figured if any people here have had the same issure, or experienced in this area I should ask.

Thanks alot for the reply Chicagocole24!

Hey Jadkins05,

I've experienced the same thing. I'm 32 and also a graphic designer and have been going to the gym for about 6 years now. the head pain has happened to me a few times too and just resurfaced two weeks ago. I googled for head pain and found this forum. I was doing bench presses and when I neared the end of set, I got a sharp pain in the back left of my head. Scarred the crap out of me because the pain is so intense. It goes away after about 45 minutes and leaves me with a slight headache. 2 days ago I got it again when doing pullups. At my last pullup I got the pain in the same place. I've deduced that it is a strain from high intensity. It always happens at the end of my set and I noticed that my breath is held at that moment too. The solution is to probably avoid intensity at the gym and/or increase rest.

On a different topic, I occasionally get eye strain from staring at a computer all day. It feels like a type of headache, but I've been doing this long enough to realize what it really is. If anybody experiences this, I suggest taking a break or do something else like clean your office, etc. Turning down the brightness on your monitor can help too.

See my other posts for details but I am 40 and never had a headache before until the icepick / vascular spasm issue behind and slightly above the right ear.

Long story but milk and milk products were my problem. this includes cheese and everything else with milk in it.

Try to stop milk for a couple of weeks with a daily pepsi and see if it clears up.

I hope this helps

Thank god someone else has my same problem haha. Back when I was 17 years old (I'm 21 now), I first encountered this problem. The first time it happened I was doing push ups and pushing myself a little too hard. I got that pain and it scared the crap out of me. Eventually I got a bunch of tests done at quite a few doctors and I never got a clear answer on what the problem was. Most doctors concluded I just worked myself too hard and strained something. But anyways, the head pain would go away just like you all said, but I think it finally took about 1-2 months for it to finally stay away. I only got it when I'd exercise.

But I guess the reason I'm here sadly is because the pain came back the other day when I was bench pressing. I was on my last set and just like the original poster, I pushed my self to get the bar back up on my last rep. That's when I got the pain again. It's one of the most annoying things in the world. I still haven't found a real "cure" for getting it to go away faster.

Got the same thing
I'm not a doctor, but this happens to me when the heat of summer starts every year. I think it's a combination of stress, lack of sleep, a cold could be involved, pushing yourself too hard, not hydrating yourself properly, and bad breathing techniques. When I take deep breaths and drink Propel (by Gatorade), the pain goes away in minutes. Taking it easy in the weight room, getting plenty of sleep, and hydrating yourself will make it go away. Pushing yourself to hard will make it come back. I think it's a nerve. I think it also has to do with the neck muscle. Every time I lift weights, I'm always biting down and flexing the neck muscles, and a bench press definitely uses your neck muscles because you are pushing your head back.

Quick Update
I haven't posted since September, but figured I'd give a little update that since then, I haven't had that head pain again. Like I wrote earlier, it took about a month to stay away when I'd lift. Basically I went back to some smaller weights, and tried to build up to the bigger stuff again. I'd stop the exercise I was doing just as I felt it come on, and move to a different set of muscles. I'm almost positive now that it has to do with your breathing while you are pushing yourself to your limits. If at any point your are struggling with the weight and you don't keep exhaling/breathing, I think you are going to be prone to getting that straining headache.

left side of head
I also have this pain, whenever i start bench pressing, perhaps due to excitement or weight itself. Strange, because I've been working out for 3 years already, then i stopped for a year, and resumed for 2 months, then suddenly I got this pain, due to holding my breath, rested for a month, but it never got away. When i do flies (normal), I don't get the same pain as bench pressing, I wonder why?
