Q: Upper Right Abdomen Pain

Hello. For several months now I have had a pain in my upper right abdomen area (left upper area if you were looking at me). This pain is not constant and not very intense. It seems to come and go randomly. I initially thought this may be liver related because of binge drinking and because the liver is very close to where I am getting the pain. I went to the doctor and it was dismissed as gas. When the pain did not go away, I went back, and this time I had blood and urine tests done. These tests did not illicit any real findings, but I was still scheduled for an ultrasound. The ultrasound did not show any issues with my liver or abdomen for that matter. That was back in October. As of late, the pain has become more accute and occurs more often. The pain is not debilitating, just very disconcerting. I just made another doctor appointment for next week. Even though the pain started out as random, it seems to occur more at night, after eating (sometimes), and lying down. But it also happens at all other times. I have not lost appetite, my bowel movements are regular, no headaches, no other possible symptoms. Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions? Any response is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I think what you may be experiencing is irritable bowel syndrome. Alot of people think this means your bowel movements are not regular, etc which is not the case. Hear me out....

With IBS, the nerves and muscles in the bowel are extra-sensitive. For example, the muscles may contract too much when you eat. Or the nerves can be overly sensitive to the stretching of the bowel (because of gas, for example). Cramping or pain can result.

Here are some foods that may cause symptoms:

fatty foods like french fries
milk products like cheese or ice cream
chocolate
alcohol
caffeine (found in coffee and some sodas)
carbonated drinks like soda

Large meals can cause cramping and diarrhea in people with IBS. If this happens to you, try eating four or five small meals a day. Or, have your usual three meals, but eat less at each meal.

Good luck!

Especially eHealthy
it sounds like acute cholecystitis. I'd contact a specialist.

Upper Pain
hi, i had similar symptoms for 15 months and it was my gallbladder. they did ultrasounds and tons of blood work but finally my husband insisted on a nuclear med. test and it (finally) showed i had a very sick gallbladder that had to come out pronto!. in the mean time (last 15 monthes) while trying to find out why i was sick, they found kindey stone (that they just had to blast away 3 times!!) took out my appendence, tested me for everything from autoimmune to lymes. and told me it was stress, maybe an ulcer, did the endoscope test, put me on antidepressants, told me i not only had PMS but PMDD. put me on hormones. i had it out on mon april 29 and i feel bettter than i have in 15 monthes (along with some pain from the operation) but i no longer feel sick and thank Goodness crazy. it seems that this very common problem is just to tricky for reg. docs to find and only worried husbands can properly diagonise it. good luck and ask for a nuc. med (hyda scan) test pronto. i didn't have stones and all blood work for "gallbladder" looked great but low and behold it was sick and ulgy and posioning my body for over a year!! take care and take charge of your health care, remember you can fire your doc.
