A good indicator of pregnancy is when you miss your period.

The following are the most common pregnancy symptoms in the first trimester:

1. A missed menstrual period is most often the first sign of pregnancy, although a woman may still experience some bleeding or spotting around the time of the expected period. However, if a woman does not have regular menstrual cycles, she may notice some of the other symptoms of early pregnancy before it is apparent that the menstrual period has been missed.

2. Feelings of breast swelling, tenderness, or pain are also commonly associated with early pregnancy. These symptoms are sometimes similar to the sensations in the breasts in the days before an expected menstrual period.

3. Nausea and vomiting are also common in early pregnancy. Traditionally referred to as "morning sickness," the nausea and vomiting associated with early pregnancy can occur at any time of the day or night. Most women who have morning sickness develop nausea and vomiting about one month after conception, but it may develop sooner in some women.

4. Fatigue and tiredness are symptoms experienced by many women in the early stages of pregnancy. The cause of this fatigue has not been fully determined, but it may be related to changes in hormone levels.

5. Some women may experience feelings of abdominal enlargement or bloating, but there is usually only a small amount of weight gain in the first trimester or pregnancy. In this early stage of pregnancy a weight gain of about one pound per month is typical.

6. A woman in the early stages of pregnancy may feel she has to urinate frequently, especially at nighttime, and she may leak urine with a cough, sneeze, or laugh. This is due to the growing uterus pressing upon the bladder.

7. A persistently elevated basal body temperature (as occurs after ovulation) is another characteristic sign of early pregnancy.

8. Women may notice a deepening of the color of the area surrounding the nipple, called the areola and/or a dark line going down from the middle of the central abdomen area to the pubic area.

9. Some women may develop a so-called "mask of pregnancy" in the first trimester, referring to a darkening of the skin on the forehead, bridge of the nose, or cheekbones. Doctors refer to this condition as melasma or chloasma, and it is more common in darker-skinned women than those with lighter skin. Melasma can also occur in some conditions other than pregnancy.

10. Finally, mood swings and stress are common symptoms reported by many women in the early stages of pregnancy.

Honestly, I think people ask the questions they already KNOW the answers to - they just want to hear some kind of confirmation.

Have you ever noticed that sometimes, you can answer the question with the most accurate information and the poster (NOT IN THIS THREAD!) will argue with you? I think questions get asked for corroboration or, potentially, looking for information they wish to hear.

For instance, the 'Am I pregnant' posts that are so popular. The answer is always to take a test, but for some reason, people don't like to hear that. Smile

I just feel that I'm being repetitive lately. It gets aggravating that people want us to do simple research for them when all you have to do is google pregnancy. Rolling Eyes

Is it really that hard to go to the drug store and buy a freakin test?? Geeze people are getting so lazy.

The first time I thought I might be pregnant I was scared to go buy a test, but there's really nothing to be scared about (except for the potential results). I'm not a doctor, a DNA test machine or anything like that. I really get aggravated at the lack of common sense on these threads. What do parents teach their kids these days? Obviously nothing about common sense.

Agreed. When I was pregnant at 16, there was no internet (I KNOW! What on earth did we all do for information?) and I KNEW I had to take a pregnancy test to, you know, find out if I was pregnant.

That was also in the 'old' days when you had to be a chemist to figure out the pregnancy tests. Pee in a cup. Put 3 drops of urine in a little vial filled with a solution. Put another dropperful of something else in. Shake and wait for 10 minutes to see if it turned blue. - Mine turned blue IMMEDIATELY. I didn't ask anyone. I didn't run around the neighborhood asking for advice. I pretty much figured it was right since I followed the directions.

PG tests have come along way, baby, and I'm amazed that a simple stick method is too complicated for some people.

The scary part is finding out... but not finding out is nerve wracking!

I think people are just scared. Especially young people. I'm sure they've googled pregnancy and pregnancy symptoms and everything else they can think of. They've probably spent hours reading/researching. But there's nothing like hearing someone else's experience. Also, from my experience when I was younger, buying pregnancy tests is SCARY! It's, for some reason, extremely embarrassing when you're 17. And then there's the fear of your parents finding out. And the people at the drug stores do not help. I remember hearing "Aren't you kind of young to be buying one of those?" and "Hahaha, good luck! you'll need it." So, I understand where they're coming from. I think they're looking for some first hand information as apposed to the generic stuff google brings up.

I actually am a former teen mom. I'm well aware of how scary it is.

Although buying a pregnancy test CAN be scary... they put themselves in that position. If they are too scared to buy a pregnancy test, then they aren't mature enough to behaving sex in the first place.
Or at least they should have used protection

I'll tell you the scariest part! Having the father leave you after the baby gets there and you have nothing - no education, no money, no job. Oh yeah, it just gets better and better after that old pregnancy test.

yep..
i was just trying to make a point..
what's worse?
getting a little embarrassed buying some condoms or birth control...
or having to buy diapers and formula...while your other friends are buying
themselves new clothes..

i don't think alot of these girls think about this stuff...
i admit i was embarrassed to buy condoms...
but then i thought about it a little bit
and realized i wanted to be safe and not have a baby at that time in my life..

Condoms are way easier and cheaper to buy Smile Sure, you might get that look from some crochity old hag, but you get more looks and more people looking down on you when you have a baby on your hip and are counting out change for diapers. Sad

Stick with the condoms! Smile
