Q: Do I Have Hypoglycemia?

About a year ago, during the holidays, I had skipped breakfast and I started losing the ability to focus on objects, sections of my field of view were out to the point that I couldn't even read withough skipping letters, words and even sentences... Then I started losing sensation in my hands and they felt REALLY weak as in I had lots of trouble opening and closing them, then I started losing sensation in my lips and cheeks... At that point I went to the doctor (it was the scariest thing that EVER happened in my life) and the doctor said it was just a Hypoglycemic attack and it's not totally uncommon for people my age (I'm 17).

And today... over a year after my initial attack, I got it again, the order of the symptoms was exactly the same except this time it lasted 2 hours instead of 1, I also got a large headache at the end.

I am not overweight (I weigh 75kg), I got tested for Diabetes and it came out negative...

The thing is, that, although the doctor said that I had a gypoglycemic attack, I did some research and the symptoms described were not really similar to mine... So I'm asking, do these attacks sound like Hypoglycemia?

I have a sedentary lifestyle, especially during my holidays were I spend lots of time in front of the computer - I only have a break to eat.

Thanks.

It sounds like you may just have functional hypoglycemia. If you're not eating, that's the problem. You need to eat. The symptoms are consistent, yes, I'm not sure where you looked to think that they aren't, but I've had some of those in the past.

Its often not possible to diagnose hypoglycemia by simply looking at a few symptoms. Try and cut out certain foods from your diet and see how you feel. The main things that should be avoided are all sugars, refined carbs such as french fries and potato chips and fruit and juices for the time being. Swith to eating good complex carbs such as whole grain rice and good cuts of lean meat and fish.

Do this for a while and see if you notice any change.

You can also go to your doctor and ask for a GTT but this tool doesnt always help.

hypoglycemia? low blood pressure?
Hi there, I have spent a year thinking I may have IBS, but recently starting getting episodes of dizzy, blurred vision, and if I overdo a run I feel terrible. Can't explain. I know I can't eat batter, red meat etc as it caused severe cramps usually 3 or 4 in the morning. My liver feels hard and after massaging for an hour it helps. But I haven't experience this dizziness also. Last 2 mornings when lying down in the bath to do my hair my vision is impaired. NO breakfast but that scared me. Is it just low blood pressure and lack of food or could I be hypoglycemic or could this just be a virus/cold.

It's entirely possibly that it's hypoglycemia. The symptoms of hypoglycemia vary so much from person to person that almost anything goes. If it happens after you haven't eaten for a while like you'd mentioned, that makes it even more likely. The only way to really be sure is to test your blood glucose level while you're experiencing those symptoms. Besides that, try eating something with carbohydrates in it as soon as you start experiencing those symptoms. A good example is peanut butter on toast. That should help you feel better if it is indeed hypoglycemia.
