Q: Should This Boy Be Taken Into Care?

Taken from: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/6396457. stm

An eight-year-old boy who weighs over 14 stone (196lbs) may be taken into care by a local authority.
Connor McCreaddie, from Wallsend, North Tyneside, has lost a stone and a half (21lbs)in two months, but still prefers processed food to fruit and vegetables.

His mother, Nicola McKeown, has been called to a child protection conference with the local authority on Tuesday.

Family support may be offered, but the last resort would be for North Tyneside officials to place Connor into care.

The eight-year-old does have a bike and a trampoline which he uses, but he has to stop after around 10 minutes because he becomes out of breath and can vomit.

He has difficulty dressing and washing himself, misses school regularly because of poor health and is a target for bullies.

Ms McKeown, 35, told the BBC: "Connor had a mouthful of apple once and he didn't like it.

"He refuses to eat fruit, vegetables and salads - he has processed foods.

"When Connor won't eat anything else, I've got to give him the foods he likes.

"I can't starve him.

"But I'm confident I can get his weight down with a bit of help."

His life expectancy is severely prejudiced.

If you allow your child to become obese, are you guilty of child abuse? Should such children be taken into care?

He's 8 years old and almost 200 pounds?? That is seriously child abuse. Oh my .god, that poor little boy. He should absolutely be taken away.

What does she mean by "processed" foods? What does that include, exactly?

*sigh*

so junk, basically. No fresh foods?

He needs immediate help. I'm surprised he isn't in the hospital.

thats abuse.I'm sorry but if my child would only eat junk and they weren't healthy I would only buy good foods.if he didn't wanna eat them oh well.he will eat it if he gets hungry enough right?he just says he doesn't like it so he can get his own way imo.

hes a third my age and weighs more than me.

I think he *should* be taken into care.

Apparently his mother doesnt care enough to put enough effort into making sure he eats right.
She herself should put him into a program that can help. The state shouldnt have to make her do it.

That poor boy. I believe in a treat once in awhile, but nobody can live off of junk food...especially growing children. That's sad. Sad

At first I thought it was that problem where people are just never full (cannot remember the name) but when you read what food he eats then he should be taken into care - his mum is blaming doctors but hy does she allow him to eat three bags of crisps a day??

It's so sad Sad

Do you mean .Prader-.Willi syndrome?

No I think this is just a case of awful parenting, unfortunately. Welcome to a life of bullying and heart disease kid... Sad

gabriel will not eat .mcdonalds until he's old enough to *know* how bad it is for him & can make up his own mind about whether or not he wants to put that kind of "food" in his system. sure, .chris & i are guilty of eating .mcdonald's sometimes, but we know that's its horrible & we can make our own decisions.. to feed food like that to a child who doesn't know what's going on... & .especially in this case, to the point where that boy's life is jeopardized... Crying or Very sad

how old are you talking? if you don't let him eat there he might see it as forbidden fruit and eat it all the time when he's old enough to go there with friends or whatever.

we eat fast food (never mcdonalds) once or twice a month and i'm going to let finn eat it if we decide to go out somewhere. i'm hoping that'll teach him "everything in moderation" and it's ok to have once in a while as a treat.

i dont view fast food as a "treat". i can honestly say i see it as poisoning your body. its all preservatives, there is *no* nutritional value in any of it. how many times have you seen on the news ecoli outbreaks in places? *gross*!!!!have you heard about the rats in fast food places? just a few weeks ago a mexican was caught on tape around here taking a caca in someones taco bell meal.
i will *never* willingly but that cr@p in my childs body. its absolutely disgusting. i am not saying that i have never eaten it. but i view my childs body as precious.
and a few of my friends were raised purely on healthy organic foods and they have no desire to eat fast food crap.
once you introduce that into a childs diet, i think you are just asking for it. they will learn a liking for it, and just want it all that much more.

i agree. Just say "no" to french fries.

There was a study done that french fried (or any type of friend potatoe) leads to breast cancer in both men and women.

Oni will not be eating junk.

you do your thing, i'll do mine. i see it as "everything in moderation", i'm going to do the same thing with candy and other things he won't be having on a regular basis. i will *never* give him soda though.
