Q: Severe Ear Pain!

I have had a terrible, unbearable pain in just my right ear for well over the last 6 mos. I had made several trips to my dr. (Internal Medicine). I have suffered chronic sinus infections and some sort of food allergy. We have pretty much determined I have an allergy to either chocolate or caffeine. I stay away from both. I am always getting anti-biotics for sinus infections. I have had about every nose spray, anti-biotic, allergy medication, decongestant that is available by prescription and over the counter. My ear always seems to look ok when I go to the dr. My dr. sent me to an allergist over my ear pain since he could not give me anything for relief. The allergist gave me an oil drop for itchy ears...thought maybe it was due to allergiesand told me to contact her in a few weeks and let her know how it worked, and if it didn't help, maybe we could do a c-scan on my sinuses. I got no relief from the oil and the pain was not letting up. I called my dr. after a week and a half of the oil and asked if I could please be referred to an Ear, Nose, and Throat dr. I got in to see the ENT dr. He cleaned out my ear, said I had a sinus infection and checked my hearing in that ear since it seemed to be diminishing to me. My sinus infection went away, my hearing was fine, but the ear pain remained. He ordered a c-scan. My c-scan came back ok other than I have a slightly deviated septum on the right side, but no cause for concern. Ok...I am still having the ear pain. I just got off a Z-pac for a sinus infection. When I do have a sinus infection or drainage, it is always just on the right side. My right gland in my neck swells and throbs, my throat on the right hurts, but my head and face and both sides of the back of my neck will hurt. My main concern is the ear pain though. I am taking a trip in June and it is a 10 hr. flight. I am afraid of taking a flight with my ear this way. I know the dr's. said they couldn't find anything wrong, but I just am miserable and don't know where else to turn.

Welcome to E Health Forums. I'm sorry to hear about your pain. I'm not sure I can suggest anything other than getting a second opinion from another ENT physician. Do warm compresses over the ear help at all?

I have not tried the warm compresses, however I will. My ear feels like it is on fire today and it is throbbing...so I will try that. Thank you.

Severe Ear Pain - Right Ear
I have this severe ear pain also in my right ear. But I've just recently had a loss of hearing along with it, and very muffled in my head..I wish I knew what it was. I went to an Octologist (ENT) and when I told him about the pain, he said "don't know." I could not believe it. This is the answer he had for me. When I told him that I could not hear, and it was all muffled, he had the gall to say to me "not according to these test results I am holding." Can you imagine that! I had taken the hearing tests and he said my hearing loss was mild. In otherwords, as though I were lying to him about what I was experiencing now. I told him "I don't care what these results show, I'm telling you what is going on with me right now." Anyway, this went back and forth for a bit, I ended up walking past him and out of the office! This was a specialist and this is the kind of help he offered me - none. My right ear pain is as severe as ever and I'm still in the dark. I honestly believe these doctors don't know anything anymore. Rolling Eyes

Wow. I have a sharp pain in my left ear and went through some of the stuff you did. The ENT said I looked very congested and it could be that (allergies) and Eustachian tube dysfunction. Though my ear pressures were normal.
I went on Allegra and that helped for 2.5 weeks it seemed. Now the pain is back and it is unbearable! The ENT said if it came back to go back and do a hearing test.
