I have had a terrible, unbearable pain in just my right ear for well over the last 6 mos. I had made several trips to my dr. (Internal Medicine). I have suffered chronic sinus infections and some sort of food allergy. We have pretty much determined I have an allergy to either chocolate or caffeine. I stay away from both. I am always getting anti-biotics for sinus infections. I have had about every nose spray, anti-biotic, allergy medication, decongestant that is available by prescription and over the counter. My ear always seems to look ok when I go to the dr. My dr. sent me to an allergist over my ear pain since he could not give me anything for relief. The allergist gave me an oil drop for itchy ears...thought maybe it was due to allergiesand told me to contact her in a few weeks and let her know how it worked, and if it didn't help, maybe we could do a c-scan on my sinuses. I got no relief from the oil and the pain was not letting up. I called my dr. after a week and a half of the oil and asked if I could please be referred to an Ear, Nose, and Throat dr. I got in to see the ENT dr. He cleaned out my ear, said I had a sinus infection and checked my hearing in that ear since it seemed to be diminishing to me. My sinus infection went away, my hearing was fine, but the ear pain remained. He ordered a c-scan. My c-scan came back ok other than I have a slightly deviated septum on the right side, but no cause for concern. Ok...I am still having the ear pain. I just got off a Z-pac for a sinus infection. When I do have a sinus infection or drainage, it is always just on the right side. My right gland in my neck swells and throbs, my throat on the right hurts, but my head and face and both sides of the back of my neck will hurt. My main concern is the ear pain though. I am taking a trip in June and it is a 10 hr. flight. I am afraid of taking a flight with my ear this way. I know the dr's. said they couldn't find anything wrong, but I just am miserable and don't know where else to turn.

Welcome to E Health Forums. I'm sorry to hear about your pain. I'm not sure I can suggest anything other than getting a second opinion from another ENT physician. Do warm compresses over the ear help at all?

I have not tried the warm compresses, however I will. My ear feels like it is on fire today and it is throbbing...so I will try that. Thank you.

Severe Ear Pain - Right Ear
I have this severe ear pain also in my right ear. But I've just recently had a loss of hearing along with it, and very muffled in my head..I wish I knew what it was. I went to an Octologist (ENT) and when I told him about the pain, he said "don't know." I could not believe it. This is the answer he had for me. When I told him that I could not hear, and it was all muffled, he had the gall to say to me "not according to these test results I am holding." Can you imagine that! I had taken the hearing tests and he said my hearing loss was mild. In otherwords, as though I were lying to him about what I was experiencing now. I told him "I don't care what these results show, I'm telling you what is going on with me right now." Anyway, this went back and forth for a bit, I ended up walking past him and out of the office! This was a specialist and this is the kind of help he offered me - none. My right ear pain is as severe as ever and I'm still in the dark. I honestly believe these doctors don't know anything anymore. Rolling Eyes

Wow. I have a sharp pain in my left ear and went through some of the stuff you did. The ENT said I looked very congested and it could be that (allergies) and Eustachian tube dysfunction. Though my ear pressures were normal.
I went on Allegra and that helped for 2.5 weeks it seemed. Now the pain is back and it is unbearable! The ENT said if it came back to go back and do a hearing test.

Major Ear Pain
I had a twisting stabbing pain in my left ear for almost 6 months. After going to my family doctor more times than I can count and numerous trips to the ER in the same day crying and screaming from the pain I was sent to a oncologist because they "thought" I could have leukemia. After going to the oncologist he was ticked off because in all this time no one had done an MRI. The very next day I went for an MRI and by the time I made it home I had several messages on my machine from the oncologist and I found out I had a brain tumor. If you know something is different don't accept an I'm not sure answer from your doctor or go months without finding out what is going on. Best of luck to all of you!!!

Ditto, is all I can say. The third ENT put tubs in. They didn't aleviate the pain, but they did cause it to seem more localized so that the muscles in my neck don't get as tight. Good luck to all of you! I know what you are going through!

I too have been suffering severe right ear pain, intermittant (experiencing it for several days and then have a day or two of relief with no explaination) It feels like something is pushing out on my eardrum, and my entire ear area is throbbing so badly I cannot stand for my hair to touch my outer ear. It is debilitating and affecting my life in such a negative way. I have been prescribed antibiotic ear drops, oral antibiotics and steroid nasal sprays with no relief. I am desparate to find relief.

sinus/ear pain
I've had sinus/congestion problems for years--lately my right ear feels like it's inflamed-very painful when I sleep on it--I asked my chiroprator about it and he said I have 'Sinusitus'---told me to put a
warm compress on my ear & throat area--it helps --also
I need to use a netti pot rinse several times a day--
The ENT didn't say anything about sinusitus & ear pain--Try a chiroprator instead---

Severe ear pain, TMJ
I have had this same problem for over a year with severe right ear pain. My ENT diagnosed me with TMJ. He refered me to an oral surgeon who gave me a prescription for Meloxicam and told me to follow and "soft diet" (which was kinda upsetting because i am only 43 and it made me feel way old) - however, it worked! I only take the pain med. when i start to feel some ear pain and i (sadly) stay away from Sweettarts and other really hard or really chewy foods.
