Abdominal Pain
Posted: 02-21-07 20:06pm

I have had severe abdominal pain for 5 years. The pain began shortly after a surgery, which required an incision slightly above the navel and travel straight down. The sharp pain wakes me up in the middle of the night, and travels from the navel down. The pain typically lasts for 3-4 hours and then is followed by diarrhea. I usually have body aches for the remainder of the day, and not much of an appetite. I have had many ultra sounds, and a colonoscopy. The results of all tests have been negative. My appendix was removed 3 years ago but the pain has not stopped. The doctors do not know what is causing this pain. Has anyone had similar symptoms? Does anyone have any suggestions, or remedies for treating the persistent problem?

Id return to the dr, or switch to a diferent one. No pain is good or normal pain. could be as simple as scar tissue , but who knows . you need to get a dr more willing to find out the problems. I wouldnt leave it at they found nothing so nothings wrong, somethings wrong you just need a dr willing to look deeper. there could be numerous reasons for the pain.

I'm sorry to hear about the pain you are experiencing. During my experience in the OR I have done a lot of diagnostic Laparoscopies. (looking thru a scope into the belly) to find out what might be causing pain. I have seen misspaced staple (used during removal of the appendix) to scar tissue (called bands) over the bowels that cause pain. These bands can also cause the pain and diarrhea that you are experiencing. So my suggestion is to seek out a general surgeon to see if they will do a "Diagnostic Laparoscopy". I suggest this because your cat scans have been normal. Cat scans can't always pick up the bands or misplaced staple line. Hope this helps.
