Q: Picky Eater W/ Fear of Weight Gain

i know it's not healthy to eat the wrong things or even worse, to avoid eating at all, but i'm struggling to change my terrible eating habits.

i used to starve myself to keep my small shape. i'm 5'4" & weigh under 110 LBS. my weight goes up & down, but it usually never goes above 110. and, the only meat i eat, which isn't often, is chicken.

bran & were looking at week-by-week pregnancy information last night. and we're pretty sure i'm somewhere between 5-wk's and 6-wk's pregnant. i know this is a really critical time for a developing baby & i need to get as much proper nourishment as i can.

did anyone else have this problem? yesterday i didn't eat until almost 4:00 PM. and right now, it's 10:00 AM & i still haven't eaten. although, last night i was eating until about 11:00 PM. my boyfriend lives an hour away & he's coming over with a huge breakfast for me.

i'm a really picky eater & i don't live w/ my immediate family. the people i live with eat a lot of stuff i usually don't. either that or they don't food shop very often. bran's taking me out tomorrow to buy food - for me & the baby. but i know in this household, even with my name written all over my purchased goods, someone else will eat it.

er!! so frustrated. i have work in a little bit & i really don't feel like going. i waitress. which is a lot of work, but i get to eat for free while i'm there. Smile that's going to be a huge bonus for these next couple of weeks.

by the way, how much weight did a lot of you gain so far or during your pregnancy? is the first trimester when you're supposed to gain the most?

thanks!!

I'm 5'4" as well. I weighed 112 at my first prenatal appointment (I was 6 weeks or so, I think?) and the day before I gave birth to my daughter, I was 149. I'm now 120ish, so .i've only kept 8 pounds of pregnancy weight. And some of that is in my breasts, since I breastfeed my baby.

If you're pregnant, you will gain weight. I'm sorry, but it's true. Not only that, but you will probably get stretch marks. Your hip bones might widen (mine did, anyway) and will stay that way. None of my pre-pregnancy jeans fit anymore just because of my hip bones. I used to wear a size 0 jean, and now I wear a 4. But still, many people tell me I look great. They can't tell that .i've had a baby.

If you're a picky eater, go back to the basics. CHicken, beef, vegetables, fruits that you like. Healthy snacks, like grapes or nuts. Try to eat dairy at least once a day. Drink lots of fluids - water is best. Take prenatal vitamins. Doing all of this will give your body (and your baby) the nutrition it needs - but it will keep empty calories away. If you're careful about eating greasy fattening foods, you'll minimise the weight you'll be stuck with after having your baby.

But do not starve yourself. DO not skip meals. Eat something healthy, but don't not eat. That isn't fair to your baby. Your body isn't just yours anymore - you're sharing it with someone else, and he/she can't control what you put (or don't put) into it - only you can. Every time you think about not eating, just imagine your little one inside, shivering with hunger.

I hope that you are not under the impression that because you are pregnant that you are automatically suppose to eat everything in sight. But you do need to eat. The key is quality not quantity. You by all means should *not* withhold food from yourself to stay small. When you are hungry you need to eat healthy well balanced meals. Try snacking on fruits and vegatables thoughout the day. And you definately need to continue taking your vitamins if you fear you are not eating responsibly. You have a life that is completely dependant on you. You are no longer making decisions for yourself, but for you and your child. You need to think of how and what you will feed them once they are eating solid foods. Would you let them go untill the evening without eating anything? i hope not. If you eat healthy meals the weight gain will be within the healthy range and you will thank yourself for providing for your child.

they recommend only gaining 2-4 pounds in the first trimester. eat normally, don't pig out thinking you're "eating for two". if you gain about 20 pounds overall (which is about the average weight gain), you'll lose it all within a few weeks after giving birth because the baby, placenta, and fluids weigh about that.

thanks for the advice everyone. calmed my nerves quite a bit. i think i'm being overly paranoid. i'm so worried about something awful happening to my pregnancy & especially to my baby. but i'm sure that's normal for a mother to do. i started my prenatal vitamins yesterday & plan on making my first doctor's appointment soon.

It is expected for you to be paranoid about pretty much everything. It is just maternal instict to want to protect your child, even before they are here. I'm sure you'll do a wonderful job. Good luck with your first Dr appt. Hopefully you'll be able to hear the heartbeat Smile

im a picky eater also, always have been, i hate all vedgibles pretty much other then cooked broccoli, and non cooked mushrooms, carrots and cucumber. lol i never really had fruit in the house other then red seedless grapes. we never go food shopping that often, and when i was first preggers i lived with my dad he never got foods i liked, he never got snacking foods often (trust me get alot of healthy snacking foods you'll need it) and yeah, it sucks beig a picky eater its so hard to eat things i dont like because i feel like vomiting when i do...

If you love your baby thou you will make yourself swallow things you dont like for the sake of your babys health, i know i did. I ate so many things i hated and felt like puking but i made myself swallow it. and if i can im sure you can...

you might not gain a hell lot of weight from being preggo, when i got weighed at the docs for the first time when i was preggers i was 87lbs, im now 90lbs which isnt a big jump... but i've also been eatting a hell of alot better. As for my pre preggy clothes, they all fit, and my hips did expand abit making my jeans fit abit more snug then they did but that made me happy. im still a size 0!!!!!

i am an extremely picky eater, also. but you've got to try to do your best to get the nutrients you need for your baby! you *have* to gain weight during pregnancy. your baby needs you to! you should try to get yourself on a good eating schedule. for breakfast, eat a bowl of cereal, an apple, have some orange juice.. for lunch, have a salad & a healthy sandwich, or healthy pasta. for dinner, eat some chicken, or beef.. potatoes, vegetables (extra sweet corn is my favorite).. keep it simple, but healthy! & .drink *lots* of water.. & .if you drink juice, make sure it's 100%. you won't gain a ridiculous amount of weight as long as you're putting the right kinds of foods into your body. eat healthy snacks like cottage cheese, cheese & crackers, fruits, granola bars, etc.

oh, & i was about 150lbs & 5'5" before pregnancy... & .i'm now about 190lbs. so .i've gained 40lbs & i still have a month left before my due date.
