Q: How do I know when I'm ovulating?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 20th, 2007
Hi Doc,
My question is that since I took Metformin and got a period, does that mean I am ovulating? I have been taking Metformin for the last 2 months, and both times I got a period on the 10th. How do I figure out when I am ovulating? Also my doc had also said that she noticed something on my CT scan and would like to discuss further. But she also said that it wasn't that serious, it was something that happens to a lot of women, and she would have to refer me to endocrin. She didn't mention to me what it could be, Do you think it could be tumor?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Menstruation always comes after ovulation. Vaginal bleeding without ovulation is not menstruation at all, but is called but spotting, or metrorrhagia. Menstrual periods without ovulation are usually irregular. Sometimes spotting can occur regularly every month, but the bleedings are not termed "menstruations" but are called "false menstruations", or pseudomenstruations. One of the manifestations of Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is lack of ovulation and irregular cycles. Metformin is used for treating PCOS. PCOS is endocrine disorder with an unknown reason.
In your case, getting your period after taking metformin doesn’t mean that you have experienced ovulation. Ovulation can be proven in a few ways:
1. by measuring the body temperature-several hours after ovulation, the body temperature increases for a little;
2. by using ovulation predictor kits (OPK)-several hours before ovulation, Luteinisating hormone (LH) level peaks can be registered by the OPK, and
3. detecting the hormone progesterone in the second phase of the cycle; after ovulation, the ovulated follicle turns into a yellow body that produces progesterone.
