My 17 year old daughter has catamenial epilepsy. Currently she is on carbamazepine and zonesamide. Would the introduction of progesterone hormone help with her seizure control? Please suggest a suitable medication. Her seizure predominantly centres during the time of the month apart from when she is suffering from cold. Please advise.

Catamenial Epilepsy
At least in the US, this is a big area of research at the present time. There are clinical trials going on with the use of natural progesterone. Perhaps they are studying this in your area too or you could watch for the published results of the studies. Physiologically, Estrogen lowers the seizure threshold and progesterone raises it. Thus the reason for the studies however I think the main idea is to even out the hormone swings because it is the sudden changes that are the problem. My daughter has a serious seizure disorder but the most troublesome events for increased seizure activity are when her hormones are swinging around and when she is sick. We actually tried the natural progesterone study and, for her, it didn't make much if any difference. Some people do respond according to the study nurse.

Catamenial epilepsy
When i was 13 i started my periods and shortly after that was diagnosed with epilepsy.
I always had a "abscence" a week before my period and it isnt a fit i always want to sleep and thats it. ive tried tegratol and it didnt work.
I read a story today about catamenial epilepsy and it sounds exactly like what ive got.
the only thing is when i was pregnant with my first child i didnt have any abscences and then i went on microgynon (the pill) after and didnt have any then either.
Then i came off the pill and we started trying for our second child and i started having abscences again and when i eventually got pregnant with my 2nd child i still had abscences but even more frequent than ever.
Now ive just gone bk on the pill and im praying it stops my abscences again.
Has anyone had anything similar to this?
