Q: Is lump on neck a Haemangioma?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 18th, 2007
the above information is for my son.
Born at 30 wks, had strawberry hemangioma on neck (halfway between ear and shoulder). Textbook, grew rapidly, peaked by age 2-3 and reabsorbed by 8-9 years old. Now he is 14. In the last 72 hours, it has a lump in the area. Started as a small lump, tender to touch, now is pea size and is raised above the skin. His neck is sore to turn. Could it be possible that this is regrowth. Any information you could give me would be greatfully appreciated.
Thankyou in advance, Shelley Claus

According to your description (“a small lump on the neck that showed in the last 3 days, raised above the skin and tender to touch”) your son is probably not experiencing a re-growth of a haemangioma. Haemangiomas are red in color and of a soft consistency, don’t grow fast and are not painful. Nonetheless, you can bring your child to his primary health provider for a physical examination (inspection and palpation).
