Q: What are the signs of a Genital Infection?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 12th, 2007
First of all haven't had period since Sept. 22 2006. Went in for preg. after preg. and they all came up negative...So with the frusteration of 3 yrs. of trying to get preg. and nothing, we decided to start fertility testing. By the way still haven't figured out why I am not having my period...if you have any suggestions I am open to anything.
I had a HSG less than a week ago. It was a terriable experience and never want to do one again. I was sore the next day and a lil the next. I thought the lil bit of cramping would go away all of a sudden it started coming back. Should I be concerned with infection? These cramps are a lil lower than to where a normal mens. cramp would be. What are the signs of infection? I do not have fever or cold sweats or any other signs but the cramping...please help.

Infertility Answer A2371
Signs of a genital infection depend upon the anatomic localization of the infection (where the infection is located on the body)
1. Infections of the vulva (vulvitis) manifest with vulva itching, burning, local pain and local skin lesions;
2. Vaginal infections (colpitis) manifest dominantly with vaginal discharge. Itching, burning and painful sex can be also present;
3. Cervical infections (cervicitis) manifest with slight vaginal discharge and painful sex;
4. Uterine infections (endometritis) manifest with vaginal discharge, irregular vaginal bleeding and lower abdominal pain;
5. A tubal infection (salpingitis) carries poor symptoms (slight vaginal discharge and lower abdominal pain or discomfort) but the consequences can be terrible (occlusion and sterility);
6. Ovarian infections (oophoritis) manifest with lower abdominal pain and discomfort.
As you can see, pain is present during any genital infection, more or less, on any anatomic location. Pain as a symptom is not enough to establish correct diagnosis.
Another remark: your sex-hormone levels (FSH, LH, estrogen and progesterone) can’t be normal if you haven’t had a period since the 22nd of September. It seems likely that this is the reason for your infertility.
