Thyroid ablation using I-131
I had thyroid cancer in 1980. It was found when I underwent surgery to biopsy what was believed to be a "fatty tissue nodule". That was followed by the I-131 treatment (dose unknown). I was told that was necessary to "kill" any thyroid cells that might still be in my body "even if it is in your big toe". I don't remember being isolated or sick and the records can't be found. I do remember having a scan afterward. No recollection of the result. I have always believed that I had no thyroid tissue in me.

In December 2008 a CT scan showed tissue growing where the thyroid used to be. A second CT scan was performed in April to confirm. Then an I-131 Uptake was done. Once it was confirmed that there was thyroid tissue I underwent what is now called a "thyroid ablation". I swallowed 174.7 mCi of radioactive iodine, stayed in isolation 3 days in the hospital. When I came home I was to stay at least one meter away from other people. I had the follow-up scan 9 days after the dose. It is helpful to know that others have experienced the same symptoms that I have been experiencing.

However, I would like to know if anyone else has been off of their thyroid replacement (Synthroid or otherwise) for 50 days during this process. To date I have been off work for a month due to confused thinking, fatigue, frustration/anxiety, no stamina, etc. I have been back on Synthroid for 15 days and don't yet feel safe to drive. I can't taste food, but the nausea and metallic taste in my mouth are finally gone. I am very concerned about when I can expect to be fully functional and able to go back to work.

I am eager to hear if anyone has information to help me.

Hi everyone!

I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer 6 years ago when I was 22. I had a complete thyroidectomy and radioactive iodine treatment. Things have been going well up until yesterday when I went to see my endocrynologist for my 6 month check up. She found a lump in my neck, which she said was an enlarged lymph node. I'm waiting for an appointment for an ultrasound, but I'm freaking out pretty badly in the meantime. I was wondering if any other thyroid cancer survivors have had similar experiences.

Thanks
Rachel
