I've been on the pill since april of 2005. I've switched a few times to different brands because of bad side effects. I've been on ortho-tri-cyclen lo for about 3 months now (was on it about a year ago, switched brands and then went back to otc). Here's what happened:

i lost my pill on saturday while at work (day 9 in the pack). I took the pill on sunday and monday. On monday, while at work, I started my period. I've missed a pill or two before and this never happened. I've been on my period since monday afternoon. This is day 5 and i'm still having heavy bleeding. I haven't missed a pill since last saturday. I thought by continuing with the pack, my period would stop. It didn't. I've been having a lot of pressure in my pelvic area, almost like cramps, but not quite. Today, the blood went from all red to red and brown.

Has anyone ever heard of this? I started my period 2 weeks early, am having lots of pressure in my pelvic area, brown bleeding, and the bleeding is heavy on day 5.

Any advise would be wonderful. Thank you!

Also: I called my doctor and the nurse said to keep taking my pills as if I never started my period. I made an appointment for next friday for a pap.

hey. i'm having a similar problem i've been on birth control for two years now nonstop and i went to Germany for vacation but have kept taking my pill everyday but i started my period a week before i got to my sugar pills. i figured that it may have to do with the eight hour time difference. my doctor upped the strength of my birth control four months ago and my periods have been lighter. i'm still on my period almost two weeks later with very heavy bleeding and my blood is almost slimey with intense cramps in my lower back and pelvic area. i have continued my pills like normal except i skipped the sugar pills and moved onto the the next pack since i was already on my period but i still haven't stopped bleeding. did you ever find out what was wrong??

I forgot all about this post Smile

The dose was too low for my body, that's why I was having breakthrough bleeding. I stopped taking OTC and my period stopped immediately, it was actually MAKING me bleed, 3 weeks total. I switched to a few other pills before finally giving up last year, the side effects were too bad (the worst one was loss of libido, which 13 months later, is having long term effects).

What pill are you on now? It's possible your body needed the break from the Pill for that one week and your cycle is a little messed up. About 4 months ago I decided to give The Pill another go... another low dose pill and a week and a half into the Pill, my period started. Some pills may not work with your body. I suggest stopping this pill for a week to see if you stop bleeding. Once you stop bleeding, you could start the same pill up again or try another one Smile Pills are hit and miss. Good luck! I get e-mails when people reply to this, so I'll read whatever you post.
