Q: Sinus headaches and nasal pressure
asked by: DoctorQuestion on February 5th, 2007
Strange Nose Clicking:
I've been noticing lately that if I apply a bit of pressure with my fingers to the left side of my nose, just below where the hard bone ends and the soft cartilage starts, I hear a fairly loud clicking noise. Once I click it, it wont click again unless I wait for ten to fifteen minutes. It feels as if it might be releasing pressure or something, so I've been clicking it 10-15 times/day.

My question is, is this bone/cartilage related (similar to cracking knuckles), or is there a pocket of pressure that I am releasing with the light pressure? Also, is it bad to to this? I am occasionally susceptible to sinus headaches, and since I've developed this clicking habit, the sinus headaches seem less frequent.

Thanks so much for your consideration on this perplexing situation.

-Chris R.

That “strange nose clicking” is probably the same as cracking knuckles. You should probably refrain from clicking your nose. It doesn’t seem likely to me that this bad habit can relieve you from a headache caused by sinus inflammation. You can seek an opinion from an ENT specialist for an examination and more information.
