Q: Dating And Herpes

I just found out for a girl i've been dating for 5 weeks that she has genital herpes. We haven't had sex yet due to the fact that I really like the girl and have been taking it slow. I don't know much about the std or if infact it's wise to attempt sex even with a condom and during a non breakout time period. I'd hate to lose her but I just know if it's worth the risk of myself getting it.

I will be honest and say that any sexual activity will put you at risk. Herpes is a kind of nasty std as there is no cure for it. If you get it, you have it for life. You can treat the symptoms, but not the disease itself.

Using a condom will decrease your chances of getting it, but it certainly will not eliminate your chances. Ulcers can occur on places that condoms don't cover, so you wouldn't be fully protected in that case. Even if your partner is symptom free, you can still get it, however.

If you want more information I recommend this site:

I Want to Know Too
I just contract herpes too..........And what you had just posted will be something that pops up in future for me too.........

It does puts you in a delima right? I know its a terrible feeling, honestly, I have no answer myself. All I tell u is that herpes is a damn infectious virus and if u have the symptoms, the pain is like slashing 1000cuts on your gentials and pouring salt water on it all the time. Thats the pain I had to put up with it and still going on.

Why don't u seek a professional advice, like a doctor, ask for other than condoms prevention, i'm not sure what else can be used.

But I would like to hear all the men's opinions on this too.......Would u date a girl with herpes

I know guys, I just contracted herpes this past december (merry effin christmas) but its not the end of the world. My doctor said being protected and without an outbreak, the chances are really low. Also!

Bkeme!
Woman are 10 times more likely to get it from a man rather than vice versa. So the chances of your future partners getting it while wearing a condom are very small. We just have horrible luck. Doesn't it seem that women sometimes get the bad end of the stick everytime?

I'm still not sure what to do. I mean she's a wonderful person, she just got the raw end of the deal in a past relationship.

I agree that you should talk to your doctor. Is this girl on medication for herpes? Go onto the website for the med that is used to treat the symptoms of herpes and see if you can get any info on it.. I think it's called valtrex.

If she told you than she's at least being up front and honest with you, which is good.

To be completely honest with you, I don't see anything wrong with dating her. I definately think you should seek professional advice on how to keep your risk of getting this low, but as long as it's not during an outbreak and you use a condom, your chances are pretty low anyway. Herpes really isn't anything more than a permanent skin irritation, it'll only get in your way if you let it. Don't let something like that stop you from pursuing things with someone if you really do like them. Just ask a doctor how to keep your chances low. =) good luck.
