Q: Alternatives to gallbladder removal?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 31st, 2007
12 small stones were seen on otherwise normal ultrasound. no other organ or ducts diagnosis, no irritation, no enlargement, no sludge--just 12 small gallstones. doctor said i may have passed one. three attacks since jan. 1, last one ending in ultrasound in mid january. told to have gallbladder taken out because of small stones. no alternatives given. no other tests done except blood tests and all bloodwork totally normal. remove at age 18 because of 12 small stones and this history? how many opinions should i get?
more tests? extreme pain during attacks, nausea.

An ultrasound detection of stones in the gallbladder is evidence enough to prove the cause of abdominal pains. Gallbladder stones (cholelithiasis) are successfully treated only surgically (laparoscopic gallbladder removal).
