Q: Induction Opinions

Hey girls, I was wondering what all of your thoughts were on induction. The doctor gave me the option to induce a few days before I am due if I don't go into labor by then and i'm not sure what I want to do. My doc will be out of town for 4 days when i'm supposed to have the baby and I haven't been making much progress so she offered me this option so I can insure that she will be there and that I won't go like 2 weeks overdue!! I have heard that the contractions hurt more with induction and I was wondering how the experience was for those of you that had it done. I am also in college so inducing would help to make sure I don't have alot of unnecessary absents, I dont mean that to sound selfish, I am simply thinking of all the pros and cons. Oh I was also wondering if anyone has a general estimate of how much more it costs if you get induced. Thanks for all of your thoughts...

Well as you asked for opinions...

I think it is incredibly wrong.
Baby will come when baby is ready.
Unless you have a medical issue that requires you to be induced then you should stay away from it as much as possible.

I cant stand doctors like that. Inductions should be for medical purposes only, not for peoples conveniences. There are more risks with inductions and it is completely unnatural, not to mention they dont always work.

Ya I think also that induction should happen for medical reasons or if you're way overdue and it could affect the baby.

My doc was on vacation when I went into labour and I had a diff doc. Actually 2 diff docs (i was in labour for a long time :s )

As far as the contractions being worse with an induction, I disagree. I was induced on the 9th and had contractions all day long that felt like mild gas cramps. They didn't get really painful until near the end on the 10th.

Let me warn you though. If your baby isn't ready to be born, your induction could take a while. Mine took almost 30 hours.

I dont' think that it's right. Any doc that delivers you is going to do the same as your doctor would. I dont' think that there is any reason to induce if it's not for medical reasons or if your overdue. If you haven't made any progress then maybe your baby will wait until she gets back.

I think that's a pretty lame reason to induce. The doctor doesn't even really do anything except catch the baby, the nurses do all the work so why does it matter if your doctor is in town or not?

I was induced (for medical reasons) and while I can't compare the contractions to a non-induced labor, they were awful. The induction didn't work and after 14 hours of horrible labor I had to have a c-section.

I was induced and was one week late. The baby was not ready at all. Unlike aya, my contractions were horrible;labor really was hard. I have an extremely low tolerance for pain, though. Very low. I have nothing to compare that pregnancy to.

Thanks for your opinions girls. Its really helped and I don't think i'll even be considering doing the induction for now. It sounds like a much better route to let him come when he is ready..And who knows maybe he'll make his appearence before then anyways!

exactly, at the hospital im going to deliver at the doctor doesnt even come unless there is a problem (pushing way too long and need help, c section, fetal distress etc) other then that the nurses and midwife on call do all the work

i only know that cause a friend of mine delived her little girl about 2 weeks ago...She had pitocin and she said it was hell, also my sister was induced with her last and she said it was horrible, she was screaming the entire time then right as she was crowning she was exausted and couldnt push anymore

sorry I cant be of any more help and all my stuff is from other people
