Q: Skin condition: flaky with red spots
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 27th, 2007
About a year ago I started getting little red spots on my chest, maybe about pencil eraser in size, just slightly raised from the skin. They cluster together and have spread throughout my entire chest, most of my stomache, my upper arms and now into my lower arms. My chest will occasionally itch, but I don't know if it is related. The spots are red but when they reach my lower arms where it is tanned they look more like white spots. I've switched detergents and it hasnt helped. It began almost a year ago, and before that I had never seen them, although I did have bacne and chest acne. It doesn't hurt so I never pursued medical attention, but now that it is spreading into areas of skin that people can see such as my arms I would really like to get rid of this condition. Also, when I scratch normal skin, it may just leave a little red scratch mark, but when I scratch these blotches the skin begins to flake away. Thank you for your time.

According to your description (“red/white spots that spread and flake away when scratched”), you could be experiencing a fungal skin infection (Pityriasis versicolor). You can visit your primary health doctor or dermatologist as soon as possible to diagnose and treat the skin.
