Hey everyone. I have a very disturbing thing happening to my 16 week old nephew. Today he was admitted into the hospital because has only gained 1 ounce since he was born. He was 8lbs 6 oz when born and is now 8 lbs 7 oz. My sister is flipping out because she feels terrible because she missed one appointment because they moved 3 hours away and couldn't find a pediatrician that she liked. The dr's aren't blaming her because he was eating every two hours and he was eating around 6 oz every time. He also was eating cereal and not even spitting up. They know that it is not cf which is what she was scared it it because she is a carrier and never got her husband checked. Anyways, the drs can't find anything wrong but I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of anything like this before.

Noah when he was 1 day old

noah a few weeks ago, you can see that he has gotten very sick looking

i wanted to show you the pictures so that maybe it would ring a bell if anyone has ever heard about what he is going through.

cystic firbosis.

Are they positive thats not what it is?

To me it sounds like he has some sort of disorder where you dont abosorb certian nutrients. He should def. Get tests done by a specialist. Good luck.

They are running so many tests on the poor little guy. They don't think that it is cf because his lungs are perfect. Oh I forgot to mention that he has this rash all over his back. My sister thought that it was a milk allergy but she was wrong. It's her third son so she is beating herself up that she didn't take him to the doctors earlier.

They don't know. They have him in isolation right now and only my sister can hold him. I feel so bad for my sister because so many things seem wrong with my lil nephew.

I am by far no expert in cf but I have read that a child may not have signs in the lungs at first but in the digestive tract or other areas. The lungs are primarily affected but it may not show up. A common symptom is thick, heavy, sticky mucus, salty sweat, and there stool is different. The first sign is lack of weight gain in
infants. Here is an article I found. Perhaps you have seen it.

did the baby a specialist or was it just a general pediatrician??? It sound like they are trying to get to the bottom of what is happening. I am so sorry. I can't imagine how hard it would be seeing a 16 week old still be only 8 pounds.

thanks for the link! I don't know now, but they so think that it is not cf. I do believe that he is seeing a specialist though. My sister really wants to know what is going on. Thanks for all the support. I was there when he was born so I feel so close to him so this is about to kill me.

Oh my .God, poor little guy. I'm surprised they didn't catch this at any of his other appointments, not counting the one she missed. Maybe he has a metabolic disorder? Keep us updated, okay? Sad

I just spent the day with my sister and her baby. He seems to be doing better but we still had to feed him every half hour. The doctors think that he is just allergic to dairy and so he wasn't absorbing any of the nutrients in his formula and since my sister was nursing too she was drinking milk which wasn't helping. They tried to give him soy but he is allergic to that too so they are giving him a hypoallergenic formula. Dang, it's expensive too but it seems to be all that he can take. He has gained 8 oz but they think that might be because they did his iv wrong and his leg got all swollen and puffy.

Anyways, just wanted to let you all know that he is doing better but they still don't know how long he is going to be there. They want to keep him until he weighs 10 lbs. I hope that it is soon!

My nephew has cf he wasn't diagnosed until almost 2 ...The doctors thought he just had asthma so never bothered testing for anything else ....He wasnt gaining any weight as well and his bowel movements were horrible smelling as well as as his tummy was desended out like a malnurished child from a 3rd world country ....The doctors thought he might have bowel cancer and performed all kinds of tests on chase including the salt test where they saddly discovered that is what he has ....Once getting onto his medication which he has too take with everything he digests pretty much he has put on alot of weight ...He is now a very happy healthy and chubby 7 year old.
