Q: Abdominal pain, billary colic, and dysentry
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 21st, 2007
I am a 34-year-old female, I will give you a little history of my self, I was severely abused by my ex-husband, and he often refused to take me to the hospital. He even seemed to enjoy the pain, if I showed any, I was in and he would hit or kick me more so he could see it. I learned not to show the pain I am in because of this.

I have been having dysentery and pains in my abdomens upper right side just below the rib cage and it travels around my side then up my back just between my shoulder blades and sometimes I can feel the outline of my liver since 1995, when I was pregnant with my son.

In 2003 they found out I had Gallbladder Disease and I had it removed. However, the dysentery and pain never went away. I even had an ultra sound done of that area in 2004, and it showed a small cyst like lump on my liver, it was so insignificant that they said it was nothing to worry about.

In 2005 and the first part of 2006 I have had extensive liver blood testing done for liver functions and hepatitis B and the only things out of whack are my white blood cells being up and my Iron is a little low. Another thing is is that I cannot take Iron or calcium supplements because I double over in severe pain, the pain comes from my upper right Abdominal side just under the rib cage and travels around my side and up my back to between my shoulder blades.

My doctor also said this could be Dumping Syndrome from the Gallbladder surgery. He also said that this could be Adhesion from the surgery, but will not do any sonograms to look into it. I do not agree. I have had this since 1995. My doctors are trying to tell me that the pain I am in is all in my head because I am not showing any pain on my face when they examine me.

My question is; What could this be? In addition, should I ask for a liver specialist?

According to the symptoms you describe (abdominal pain that appears similar to billiary colic and mucous-bloody diarrhea (dysentery)), your medical history (gallbladder removal, liver cyst, depression) and the results of the medical examinations that have been performed (blood work with liver status…) it is hard to diagnose the condition without additional diagnostic procedures. You'll need to request microbiological examinations of the stool and colonoscopy to explain the dysentery symptoms. A gastroscopy with an Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio-Pancreatico-graphy (ERCP) can be performed to identify the pain that comes from the upper abdomen. An abdominal ultrasound and CT -scan should also be done.
You can consult a gastro-entero-hepatologist, an internist for gastrointestinal and liver diseases, for more help.
