Q: Smoking pot & drinking during pregnancy
asked by: DoctorQuestion on January 13th, 2007
Doctor Question
I am close to 16 weeks pregnant, and found out about my pregnancy Nov.1 , the aprox. date of conception was Sept.23. This was a completely unplanned pregnancy, although I am very excited to bring a new life into this world. My concern is that for the whole month of October I had no idea I had this little baby inside of me, and was quite reckless with my actions, drinking partying and even smoking marijuana. Everytime I think about it my heart breaks a little and I become overwhelmed with fear that I could have done something to damage my little one. What are the chances of damage (such as fetal alcohol syndrome) if I drank about 6 times in the first trimester, and used drugs (like pot) about 6 or 7 times.
I am very concerned and it is eating me up inside , please someone help.

Alcohol is a teratogenic substance meaning that it can damage the fetus. There is a small possibility that drinking alcohol 6 times in 3 months can damage the fetus. It also doesn’t seem likely that smoking marijuana 6-7 times will damage the fetus because marijuana is not considered a teratogenic substance. You must do regular ultrasound check ups at your obstetrician to evaluate the fetal growth and health.
