Q: Ganglion Cyst On Wrist

I was told today that I have a ganglion cyst on my left wrist. I am wondering if my doctor is whacked and dosen't know what he is talking about. I have been having real bad pain in my wrist. I know I hurt it a few days ago, but I do not remember what I was doing. If I look at my wrist (palm facing me) and put any pressure on the outter right base of my palm (hard to explain). I can feel extremely sharp pains on the top side of my wrist/lower arm. The doc said it was a ganglion cyst. But the thing I do not understand is..There is no lump. Wouldn't I see a lump? He gave me an anti-inflammatory called nabumetone 750 mg and it dosen't seem to be helping whatsoever. Any ideas on what else it could be? I cannot be from working because I am a stay at home mother and I do not use my left hand (im a righty). Have any of you had a ganglion cyst or know from experience if this could in fact be one? I'd really appreciate it...Thanks.

Cyst
You may not be able to feel a bump with a ganglion cyst. It could be deep in the joint. Did your md explain to you why he/she feels it is a cyst? Did they do an mri/x-ray

in most cases these cysts are not painful, but they can be a source of pain if they are in the right area..

Bottom line, it could be a ganglion cyst.

Doc Appt
Well I got an xray done today at my appointment. Nothing is wrong with the bone...No breaks or anything. So they think something is wrong with my tendon. But I swear its the bone that is hurting. There is no swelling and/or bruising and never was. On the x ray there was a strange matter on the xray..But it was in my upper forearm. He asked if I was ever shot by bb gun..Nope haven't been. So he said it could be a calcified tendon. But it shouldn't be affecting my lower wrist. Any ideas? I am in a removable cast for 2 weeks and if not better then...Physical therapy..I don't feel that is necesary..Plz help!

Hmm
Could be lots of things. If things don't get better ask your md for a referral to a hand specalist.

Cyst
Jaydensmommy, you don't have to have a bump. I had one on my left hand a couple of times. It did go away. If you bend your wrist down, do you see or feel a bump? What about carpal tunnel syndrome. I am a righty, but am having problems with my left hand. Were xrays or a nerve test done on your wrist, if not ask or demand one or see another doctor for another opinion Wink

Wrist Pain
Dear jandensmommy: years ago I had a ganglion on my right wrist ( I am a righty) and needed surgery to remove it. It looked like a walnut sitting on my wrist but I did not incur pain. Now I have awful pain in my left inner wrist that a neurologist and an orthopedic doctor told me was caused by an irritated nerve. It started last august and I was told it could last for 6 to 9 months. Well, it is now 6 months with no sign of let-up. I have a mar. 4th appointment for a different problem with the orthopedist and will ask again - only this time I want more specific reasons of why this nerve is irritated. It is swollen and interferes with sleep and I have no strength in the left hand because of it. Could this be your problem too?
Has anyone ever heard of this before? I can find no info on it on the internet. Thanks for whatever help anyone can supply.

Left Wrist Ganglion Cyst
I was told on friday I had a ganglion cyst by my pcp. I then was told to make an appointment with an orthopaedic surgeon. Between friday and wednesday, I was playing on the floor with a child and I heard a pop in my left wrist. I looked at the wrist and the bump was gone. I then proceeded to go to the ortho surgeon and he said that I may have cured myself. He suggested that I wear a futuro wrist splint for two to three weeks during the day to limit movement so that scar tissue would form where the cyst was filled with fluid....Is this common or was he just pulling my leg thinking why did this girl come into my office without a cyst?>>>>>

It Can Happen
Ganglion cysts can and do break on their own. Some people use the bible tech. (take a big book and wack it) the problem with these cysts is they have a high rate of re-occurrence. Even after surgery!! They are usually not painful and should just be left alone if they are not causing any problems...

Extremely eHealthy
Everyone is different so the same condition can effect each of us differently.

If however you're sure it's in the bone try taking a high potency tablet of combined glucosamine & chondroitin which is good for healing bones & is natural so won't cause drowsiness or affect any meds etc.

Glucosamine and condroitin do not affect the bones of the body directly. They are thought to attract more fluid into joint spaces adding to the lubrication and decreasing pain (decrease wear and tear on the ends of the bones that make up the joints).

Just because they are "natural" it does not mean that they will not have side effects and they may interact with other medication in ways that cannot be predicted!

I have been diagnosed with a ganglion on my right wrist which is causing great pain. It is unable to be seen as it is too small but I was told that these are the most painful as they get caught between the joint whereas larger ones are usually not symptomatic. I had to have an mri to confirm it. I had a cortisone injection which failed so I have now been told that I should have surgery in march. Has anyone had it? If so do you have to wear a cast afterwards? And how long is the healing process?
I would appreciate any answers any of you may have!

Ganglion Cyst
I had a cyst removed 2 years ago, after putting up with it for a couple of years, at first it was pain with no lump but eventually the lump appeared, then after awhile it popped then reappeared along with the pain. From what I was told the cyst is the fluid in your wrist joint escaping the joint but still enclosed in the membrain ( hence the lump popping ) the surgery I had to fix it was only a hour or so under a local and was totally successful, but came with no guarantee that it will not reappear, regards col

Painful Ganglion After Cortisone Injection to Knee
After an injury to my left knee @ work, I developed terrible sharp piercing intermittent pain to the left lateral of my left knee.My doctor @ the time had it rough figuring out what it could be. He tried to aspirate :( that didn't work.He suggested I go to the doc. Who injected me. Saying that there is always a possibility of synovial fluid leaking into the joint with a cortisone injection. The doctor got grumpy. I was not accusing or complaining I just wanted the awful pain to go away. The surgery would take time away from my patient care...I fear possible complications or loss of use of my leg or that joint. Soooooo i've just hung in there 4 yrs. Suffering the sword in my flesh..So to speak. I am here tonight because the pain woke me up & would not stop :( I call it (when it wakes up & tries to drill it's way out of my knee.) it also 'wakes up' in a warm bathtub;or if there is something touching or pressing on it...Like an inqusitive doc. Or just out of the blue when i'm least expecting it or unable to take evassive action(like when i'm driving) I want to get rid of it but i'm afraid. Sometimes I can push on the area around it & ease the sharpness sometimes I use lidocaine spray like solercaine...But that didn't work tonight. Any helpful suggestions or ways to ease the torture would be greatly appreciated. My dear little doctor moved away. Most doc's don't believe me now or they offer to remove the little visible "cyst" that is now visible. But when I explain the pain & ask for complete removal down to the joint...They start to treat me like a loony-bird.  it's nice to know this site is here & other people suffer like me.

How Much Pain
I was told I have a ganglion cyst on my right wrist. I only see a very small bump but it hurts like hell. The pain is now going all the way up to my shoulder. Has anyone heard of this happening?

Ganglion Cysts Are Painful Sometimes
I myself have a ganglion cyst on my right hand that hurts all the time, today it is almost unbearable. I have had it removed once and aspirated. The surgery lasted a year, but was told due to me taking the splint off too soon after surgery it made it regrow. The aspiration was pointless. The Dr. Did not extract any fluid from it and it almost doubled in size, it is the size of a walnut and has started to limit the motion in my fingers and is excruciating to bend my wrist froward or backwards. I have been trying to see if there are any new procedures and I have seen one where the make a vertical incision, remove the cist then place a metal wire in the place where the cyst was. I have to get rid of this thing somehow.

If anyone knows anything else about this or other procedures please let me know!

Sarah31pink,
i'm looking for answers myself, but I just stumbled on some info about an arthroscopic procedure:

here's my situation: I just had ganglion cyst removed from my wrist (by surgical incision) 4 weeks ago. I now have a lump or mass of scar tissue that's at least the same size of the cyst, if not bigger. The doctor said that was normal and that it would flatten out, but physical therapy would speed up the process. I also have 2 places on this scar tissue that when touched or tapped, sends a sharp pain down to my fingers. I am a guitar player and this is really scaring me.

Has anyone else had that same lump of scar tissue post-op? Did it go away? .. Or did I just get butchered?

Wrist Pain
I have had severe wrist pain come and go and also my pointer finger
has had very bad pains come and go for the past year. Luckily it is not
permanent, so I have ignored it. I had an inner wrist ganglion removed many years back. Now when the pain strikes, it is my whole wrist, but the worst is on the top of my hand. Sometimes the pain is excruciating.
However it always goes away. I wonder if I go to a doctor if he would be able to find anything. Maybe I have another ganglion.

Ganglion Cyst And Drumming
Hi,

i've had a ganglion cyst on my left wrist, the size of a walnut. Went to the doc to see what it was and what could be done about it. Had it scanned by various means and the conclusion was it was synovial liquid escaping the joint. We tried to trace the cause of the cyst to my various activities, then when I told her I was drumming she said no need to look further. What she then said was hard to hear: the cyst would probably not go as long as I drummed. Having surgery to get it removed is not a solution she said, the thing will probably come back anyway. Last year I stopped regular drumming for several months (phd defense approaching) ... And painfully enough, she was right, the thing disappeared gradually, until it was completely gone.

Luckily non of this was ever painful but now i'm back at the drumming and would like to know if anybody had advice as to how to prevent this from happening again (while continuing the drumming of course). The answer might be nothing, but at least I can try. The question might benefit other people with several musical or sport activities that bring wrist strain. I've noticed some small swelling again, albeit at a different place on the wrist...

Pain Deep In My Left Wrist
Hi guys. From reading this post it would seem that I have inner wrist ganglian in my left wrist :( . I had one removed over a year ago that was clearly visible through the skin but the one causing the pain now is very deep and very painful and I can feel no lump. It hurts if I do a 'push up' it hurt when I pick my 2 year old up and i'm beginning to feel that (from reading this post) it's never going to go. I had to stop weight training because of it and now even the simplest of exercises are unbearable. I find it hard to belive that surgery can't take away the pain. I now know that mine came back (albeit in a different place) because I carried on training. I think that if you overwork your wrist (somepeople it can be simply typing) then these nasty things come up. I would gladly give up training to get rid of the pain I have now as it is almost unbearable and I can put no pressure on my wrist at all. Has anyone had a successful removal of an inner wrist ganglian and stopped the pain. Please say yes, as i'm a healthy 31 year old and would hate to think I would have this pain the rest of my life. Yours hopefully.....
