Q: ?side Effect of Stopping the Pill

I am a 23 year old woman who had been taking the pill (mercilon) for 5 years. I decided to stop taking it at the end of my last packet and had a light bleed lasting approx 5 days. I have now not had another period since which has been almost 2 months. I had intercourse the day before last bleed and not since. I have also become very bloated, weight gain, indigestion and nausea. Are these just normal side effects or has anyone got any ideas??

Your body has to adjust to not taking the pill anymore. If you took it for five years, your body is very used to it. It's normal for your body to be wacky for a few weeks maybe even months. If you are really concerned ask your gyno, I do however, believe it's normal.

Side effects from stopping the pill can last awhile. In some cases, it can take a year or more before your body gets back to normal. I stopped the pill in june after being on it for 7 years, and I can tell you, my periods still are not normal. I am ovulating and they are regular every 26-28 days but extremely light flow, nothing like I was pre-pill. But if you're not even having a period, you are probably not ovulating. But first, take a pregnancy test just to be sure (though i'm pretty certain you're probably not).

The pill depletes your body of a lot of essential vitamins and minerals. You should try to take some supplements to help such as a b vitamin complex, calcium & magnesium, copper, zinc, and omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids. You might also try a supplement called vitex (chaste tree berry). Some women who don't ovulate have tried it and had success. It works best over several months.

I too have noticed nausea and still have it, 7 months off the pill. I notice it is worse in my pre-ovulatory phase, from the day my period starts until the day I ovulate (really bad when I ovulate). I've lost about 7 lb. But the pill gave me horrid water retention and bloating.

First, how can the pill deplete your body of vitamins and minerals? I'd want to see sources on that since it doesn't make any sense to me.

Secondly, yaz and other pills affect every woman differently, so teresa, there was a good chance you may have been just fine on it, as many other women are just fine. it's too bad you weren't, but yaz isn't one of the pills that has a lot of complaints about it.
