Hello everyone.

My back pain started 12 years ago when I strained my back muscles. Since then my lower back muscles have seemed tender, weak and prone to full out muscle spasms every 3-4 years. When I had my initial strain all I did was go to the chropractor for a few times and take some anti inflammatory meds.

I recently decided to go to a massage therapist for to treat myself. She noticed that my back muscles are still tight and that they have a covering due to the damage (sorry I failed to remember the exact words or terminology).

Will my back ever get better? What can I do to help them get stronger or less tense? What excersises?

Your help is appreciated.

Thanks,
kevin

There are a lot of exercises that can help your back. I have been to physical therapy sessions 3.5 years ago, 1 year ago and several months ago for weeks at a time and they didn't help my severe neck pain because my pain is coming from an unknown source, however they gave me exercises to do that helped other pains I had in my back that were muscle related so maybe they will help you.

I stretch each morning before work and I notice that it helps my muscular back pain but does nothing for my nerve pain or my neck pain since it isn't muscular.

See a physical therapist. Flexeril has helped my muscle pain in the past. Anti-inflamatories and vicodin have worked too.

Strengthen Muscles
It is good to strengthen opposing muscles. So, you would need to strengthen your stomach muscles.

Keep getting massage!!

Good luck!

If It Is Purely a Spasm
a shot with Botox, followed by gradual excises should help. If there is some iflammation going on inside your muscle, then anti-inflammation agent will help heal. Need to see a pain management doc to ruled out other problems

Back Pain
I have found the best thing for chronic back pain is the Alexander Technique. It's something you have to learn and work at, and it deals with the causes rather than the effects.
There are teachers in most cities.
One good site that gives information is http://www.thealexandercentre.co.uk but there are plenty of other sites if you do a search
