To make a long story short 2 weeks ago we find out via x-ray my mom is missing a considerably large portion of bone in her femur. She's had an mri and is scheduled for a bone scan next tuesday (she's had breast cancer 3 yrs ago). Called dr today about mri and said that it does confirm that it is a portion of bone missing, however doesn't suspect cancer (he at first did). This was her cancer specialist, so he said she would need to continue with orthopedist to find out what is going on. We won't find out anything until next friday after the bone scan. She has an extreme amount of pain with this from hip down leg, not fully through but in hip, upper leg, and lower leg. Can barely lift up leg to take a step. This all started suddenly about 3 weeks ago. Does anyone have any thoughts as to what could be going on. Throw anything my way because right now I am stressing myself out so bad.

Has your mum had anysort of trauma to the hip...Has she fallen? Ever broken it? Has avascular necrosis (avn)ever been mentioned? I had/have avn, but it comes on througha trauma injury such as a a break.... It's basically a bone disease, ....When a bone breaks, it repairs it self until the break has rejoined...With avn, the bone continues to die and crumble faster than it can reapir itself....If that makes sence..This could be why part of your mum's femur is missing.

Not being a doctor or medical professional, I can't even guess how this has happend, however..It has happend to me, and becuase of it, I recently went through a 3hr op to replace it.

Hope the doctors find out what is wrong and can treat it!

Hi Julz67
I also have avn in the top of my femur when you said you went through a 3 hour operation was that an osteotomy that you had.I had a scfe which caused my avn
now i have to decide on an osteotomy or a hip replacement. I would be really interested in any more information thanks

It was a total hip replacement with an extension (for the length) that I had ( a year ago!!) Have never heard of an Osteotomy!!

If you go for the replacement, you wont regret it, I promise you that!! I was riding before the op, and I am back on a horse again now... it's made my life so much easier!!
