Okay I think I messed this up!
I got a job today to babysit this womans 2 and 3 year olds about once a week. She kept asking me what I wanted to be paid because she said she had no idea what babysitters made these days. I said I wasnt sure either, and she kept asking me to throw out a number and I said $7-$8 an hour Shocked
i cant believe I said that low of an amount for a 2 and 3 year old. When I came home and told mike he told me that was pretty stupid and laughed at me.
What would you guys have said?

I don't know... I think I would've said $10. I used to be a full-time nanny (50+ hours a week) for 4 kids who were 3 1/2, 20 months, and 2 week old twins when I started for them and I only got $8 an hour. Now that's crazy!

I got 10 dollars an hour for 4 kids for the family I watched for.

That's canadian dollars.

It's really awkward when they ask you to pick a price out of thin air... I hate it.

Just a regular babysitter here usually gets paid 15 dollars a day.

Show Me the $
I feel you are also underpaid. Watching someones children is a job. If it were me, i'd ask $8 and hour, add 1$ more for each additional child. If you were asked to do anymore, such as "light house cleaning" or an errand, you should receive extra compensation. This your time you are taking to help someone else out, therefore you should be paid! Did you take into consideration gas money to get there and back? You have to make a living too! Cool

that can't be right... So if there are 4 kids, you'll get $24 an hour?

Nat, thinking more about it I think you might have been able to go for $10 but $8 certainly isn't bad. Like a couple people pointed out she probably could've found someone for $20 a day, which is nothing.

If this lady only has one 2 year old and one 3 year old, than $7-8 an hour is a good deal. I do an in-home daycare, and I checked the daycare rates first and I make sure that I beat their prices. But from what I have learned, if you have a baby from 0-12 months, they usually charge $580 for a whole month. That is about 20-22 days total. And that is broken down to about $3.60 an hour.

As the age of the child goes up, the price goes down, because they aren't as much to handle. A person should charge more for a baby because they are more work. It looks to me like you are getting roughly $4 dollars for each kid, per hour. Which is even more than someone would charge for the care of an infant....At a daycare anyway. That is a pretty dang good deal if you compare those to daycare prices. Especially since the kids are ages 2 and 3.

Lol

daycare is really cheap here so i'm ot sure what the common sitter charges. But i'd say it depends on what is provided. Do the parents provide the food and diapers (if the 2 yr old is still in diapers) what about outings, is it you who pays or them?

I would have felt completely awkward being asked. I don't think that is a bad deal really. Like another person mentioned, it depends on what else you have to do. If you are expected to clean a little, you should be paid more. Outings is a good question, too. I really don't know what I would have said in that situation.

Especially EHEALTHy
I used to watch a 3month old, a 12month old (brother and sister), a 4 year old, and *sometimes a 4month and 12 month old*!

From the main kids, 3month, 12 month and 4 years, I would get 20 dollars per day(from 3pm to roughly midnight, 2am) for the 4 year old I would also get 20 dollars per day. I made *bank*!!

It was the best experience of my life and I thank their mothers to this day for giving me that oppurtunity!

I think that 8 dollars an hour isn't bad. If you watch them for 8 hours, thats 64 dollars per day. Which isn't bad at *all*!

Because the hourly rate sounds low, it might make people think it's too little. But if you configure it daily, it's not that bad!

Sarah
