Frequent Feeding And Stools
Posted: 01-03-07 14:38pm

------------------------------------------ --------------------------------------

my son is almost 3 weeks and is eating about every 3-4 hours, between 2 and 4 ounces (usually about 3). That is fine, but what we are getting used to are the number of stools that he is passing per day. It can sometimes be during every feeding! That's 6-7 stools per day! Usually it is a "mini-stool", but 2-3 times a day you get the "real deal". This started almost overnight about 8 days ago; previous to that he was passing one stool - if that - a day. Any experience with this? Question

in the hospital they started him on similac advance for two days then moved him to isomil due to him spitting up and not feeding well; and, he has been on that since. I know the soy is lighter and passes more quickly, can we expect these bowel schedules to resume until we move on to more substantial supplements? Question

on a side note, this was causing some serious irritation of his backside (a previous post of mine) and some modifications in the way we change and clean him have alleviated this problem (thank you for the responses we received!).

Many bowel movements a day is actually a really good thing. However if you notice that he is a little gasy, or that he has more explosive bowel movements, he could have a soy allergy too. Talk to your pedicatrician about switching to one of the other kinds of milk-based formulas that are made for sensitive tummies or lactose free.
