If a 26 years old woman has never had a
period, then she is probably experiencing
hypogonadism (failure of the reproductive
function). The cause of hypogonadism
originates somewhere in the axis
hypothalamus-pituitary gland-ovaries.
Primarily, a woman with hypogonadism
experiences no ovulation and that’s why
there is no menstruation (period). If the
problem is located in the ovaries it is
called "primary hypogonadism". If the
problem is located in the pituitary gland
it is called "secondary hypogonadism".
And, if the problem is located in the
hypothalamus it is called "tertian
hypogonadism". Female hormones (estrogen
and progesterone), taken from birth
tontrol pills, can cause only a
“period” but not ovulation. A
“period” without ovulation is not a
real period but is termed
pseudomenstruation (false period). It is
believed that after coming off the female
hormones, the normal function of the axis
hypothalamus-pituitary gland-ovaries will
establish itself spontaneously. If
contraceptive pills do not help ovulation,
stimulators like clomifen are indicated.
Some types of hypogonadism are genetically
conditioned and they can’t be treated.
