Q: Iron Tablets

I am absulutely exhausted all of the time I go to bed at 9pm and wake up at lunch time and throughout the day i'm tired all the time. Is it ok to buy iron tablets and take them once a day or is it best to talk to the midwife first? I'm just wondering because I need to get over this tiredness because my school work is suffering and I really need to do well because my gcse's are in five months so I need to be at school everyday. Thank you

I know the first trimester is tiring but I think you'd feel better if you slept less. Too much sleep just makes you feel more lethargic. I don't know about the iron supplements but maybe you could try not sleeping more than 10-11 hours at a time, I really think you'll feel better and you can nap during the day if you need to.

I can't really nap during the day because i'll be in lessons. I try not to sleep so much but I sleep through alarms and if I ask my mum to wake me up the same happens i'll talk to my midwife I think and see what she says, it just worries me a bit because i'm very likely to have diabetes through pregnancy and be anemic because it runs in both of my parent's families. Thank you

I wouldn't really take iron pills unless you are sure you need them. Like bridget said you should try not to sleep so much. The more you sleep the more tired you are. You should sleep 10 hours at the most. Plus, iron pills are not fun to take. I had to take them during my pregnancy with ethan and they make you constipated and when you do poop it smells like metal. It's nasty.

Sounds like fun. If I still feel like this when she comes to see me next i'll mention it and see what she thinks I should do meanwhile i'm going to eat three healthy square meals a day with lots of veg and force myself to get up in the mornings

Agreed.

Seriously try not to sleep so long over 12 hours is not good.

Like take a nap when you get home from school.
But sleep is one of those wierd things that the more you do the more you want.

If you set yourself a schedule and stick to it you will feel a bit better.
A short walk often helps to wake yourself up a bit too. Some fresh air and all that.

I have to take iron supplements. I found out after my glucose test that .I'm anemic. They've been helping me a lot. I'd wake up after getting a good 9 hours of sleep &go through the day feeling as though .I'd gotten no sleep at all.. It was awful! Don't just go out &buy any iron tablets, though. Ask your doctor if it's ok to take them or ask if they can give you a blood test to see if you're anemic.

Iron
Your pre-natal vitamin should have enough iron to satisfy your iron requirements for now- take it with orange juice or something instead of water, eating or drinking something with vitamin "c" at the same time will help you absorb more iron.

How far along are you? 1st trimester - you should be having (or should have had already) your first pregnancy blood tests.
The results of those tests will show whether you need more iron.

I know with my first, I was drifting off every afternoon-around 2 or 3pm.
I couldn't actually sleep 'cos I was at work, but on the way home or something i'd be keeping myself awake!!

I'd get into my jammies as soon as I got home, sometimes i'd take a little nap around 6 pm.
I'd be in bed, dead to the world by about 9, and up for work again 7.30am.
With my second- I was just as tired, but already having one to look after, I didn't really have the luxury of a nap every day!!

I found getting up and moving around shook off the sleepy most times.

Sometimes you need to take extra iron, not all mat pill contain enough iron I know I was on supplements. Alot of woman usually have iron deficiecy anemia and are usualy cured throughout pregnancy but sometimes we dont.

Honestly if you gonna get supplements ferrous sulfate(iron) 300-500mg was the best one I had taken.

I take a multivitamin everyday along with vit d and iron.
