I have always wondered why women have to get a pap smear done in order to get on birth control.

(1.) why is this???

(2.) also why do they have to have one done every year in order to still on birth control???

It doesn't make any sense to me.

Hi there =) I will help answer.

Do you know what a pap smear does?

Cervical cancer is detected using a pap smear, cervical cancer is still deadly, so it is important to test for it yearly. It spreads very quickly, but early diagnosis can help make treatment less invasive.

Basically, sexual activity is the cause of cervical cancer, thanks to hpv, or the human papilloma virus.

Planned parenthood will give you 3-6 months worht of bc pills without a pap, but you do need one.

Bc pills can increase the severity of cervical cancer, so this is especially important to know.

So is it required just prior to the receiving new bc or as long as you had it within the year? I didn't have one prior, but I had one earlier in the year...Is that okay? Just wondering since we're on the subject.

If you switch doctors..Say a new insurance policy etc.. If you tell the doctor you had a normal pap in the last year, usually they will just continue with your paps according to schedule and give you your bc.

Planned parenthood is really good about being open to giving bc out.
