Q: Am I allergic to other people? Bacterial Infection?
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 31st, 2006
Hello ..
I'm trying to find out what the cause is to these symptoms ..

these last aprox. 12 hours ..
chills .. joint pains .. headaches .. sensitive skin ..

background: I've been living in the uk now for 20 years .. since arriving i keep getting the above symptoms after being in contact with certain people .. the symptoms start aprox 45 minutes after contact and lasts about 12 hours .. it happens quite a lot to the point where i'm afraid to socialise .. .. normaly it seems to be a case of breathing something in that other people breath out .. i say this as it normally happens in a closed enviroment such as a room .. a car .. any enclosed enviroment where there seems to be a lack of fresh air .. this includes small shops .. trains .. buses etc .. .. i'm fairly sure it's an airborne bug of some nature that is possibly hosted in peoples throats .. quite often the other person has a dry cough and all (whom i know) drink alcohol of some nature .. i'm not a drinker myself .. .. it's got to the point where i can no longer see one close friend as just about every time i see him .. i get sick .. .. have noticed a couple of things .. i once worked in an office with said person and at the time a dehumidifier was installed .. i stopped getting sick from that contact .. another time i was asked to look after his cats when he went on holiday .. well i went to his house .. he had departed on his holidays .. yet i still got sick with the same symptoms .. the next week i wore a d.i.y. face mask when visiting his house and did not get the symptoms at all ( he does make wine in his house and bakes bread) .. i've also had the similar symptoms after eating bread from the local bakery .. sometimes there is an odour present .. but it's not totaly unpleasant .. this also helped breakup up a relationship as my gf at the time went to work in an office enviroment .. and i started to get the same symptoms on a weekly basis .. .. i'd say aprox 4 out of 10 people effect me like that .. and .. as i have a bad joint in my lower back the symptoms agravate that as well .. .. i've posted this in the 'bacteria' section due to the fact that the symptoms come on so quickly .. so .. **any idea what the cause might be .. and what can i do about it** ..
.. i've lived in a few countries but have never ever come across this before .. and it has made me somewhat of a hermit :-)
thank you for your time ...

Bacterial Disorders Answer A2111
According to the symptoms you report (chills, joint pains, headaches, sensitive skin) and their strange appearance (symptoms occur 45 min. after contact with other people and last 12 hours), it doesn’t seem likely that you are experiencing a bacterial infection. None of the known bacterial infections act like this. An allergy also doesn’t seem possible because allergies to people don’t exist in medical science. You may, however, be experiencing social anxiety disorder (a kind of neurotic disorder). You can ask for expert help from a mental health doctor for diagnosis and treatment options.
