Q: Neurotic disorders: somatoform disorder
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 31st, 2006
I was just a little curious about the feelings I have been getting recently. I experiance pain all over my calfs and in the front of my leg on both legs on and off daily. My right and left side of my chest get bad sharp pains ( Not both sides at the same time) Sometimes I feel a little light headed. My forearms and wrists on both arms get pain sometimes. It feels like the veins in my forearms and my neck have dull pain a lot. Also my wind pipe on my neck seems to hurt on the outside also. My calfs do not appear to be red or bigger than usual. I tipically get a small random headache that doesnt last too long. My right eye ball feels like someones pushing on it a little more than lightly. I do not experiance anxiety anymore since I am on Zoloft I do not get these attacks. Sometimes my right shoulder blade gets a quick stab pain than goes away. I am only 18 and my blood preassure / cholesterol was marked average. Sometimes I get very dull pains in my jaw. I do work out and get my proper exercise. I havn't been running recently the calf pain seemed to come out of no where.

According to the preexisting condition you've noted (anxiety) and a number of inexplicable pains in various parts of the body, it seems that you are probably experiencing somatoform disorder (a kind of neurotic disorder). During some neurotic disorders like somatoform disorder, emotional conflicts become transformed into symptoms of real organic diseases. Zoloft is one of the new generation antidepressants called "selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors" (SSRI). It is believed that depression lies at the base of all neurotic disorders and that’s why there is sense to taking these antidepressants and they've been prescribed. You can speak with your prescribing doctor about the symptoms you are experiencing, and ask about treatment options for depression.
