Tail Bone Swelling

Every few months I get a swelling in my tailbone. It makes a knot sometimes but mostly swelling the skin on the outside so much I can hardly sit as it hurts and pulls. Also the skin gets very tender and itchy. I don't know where to look for symptoms on this and don't know what it is or if it is important enough to go to the doctor on. It usually last for about a week.
