Q: Jump start ovulation with hormones
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 30th, 2006
About a year and a half ago I started on the Depo shot for the 2nd time since having my son 5 years ago. My fiance' and I decided that we were going to try for a second child in February of this year. I received my last shot in March. I had a menstrual cycle in May as usual and then nothing for five months no cramping negative pg tests one after another. I had a routine physical with my primary doctor and told him about it which he put me on Provera to help jump start me again. This was in October. It is now December almost the end of the month and I have only had one menstrual cycle, that was 3 days after starting the Provera and only lasted for 4 days. Before going back on Depo I was as normal as a horse every month I knew to the day when I was going to get it and how many days it was going to last. Also for about the last six months I have very sensitive nipples, sensitive meaning my left one gets to the point hurts so bad when something touches it or even brushes against it I want to cry, and both (when the left one doesnt hurt) they both tickle when they are touched. I also have been experiencing a decrease in my sex drive its only maybe about 3 times a month that I enjoy having sex with my partner and that is usually when my nipples are not sensitive. Thank You

Lack of menstruation and ovulation are expected temporary side effects of stopping hormonal contraception (the Depo shot). The reproductive system needs time to re-establish its full fertility after coming off hormonal contraception. When using a hormonal injection, the fertility recovery time is longer than when using hormonal pills. When using pills, the body usually needs 3-4 months to recover its fertility; in this case, 2 years is considered the maximum waiting period for establishing complete fertility. When using hormonal shots (Depo) the body usually needs(5-6) months to re-establish ovulation and fertility.

Your doctor gave you Provera (oral contraceptive) to help you establish ovulation. Provera does not stimulate ovulations, but only makes the menstrual cycles regular. It doesn't seem likely that while taking Provera you can ovulate but it is believed that after coming off Provera, ovulation will establish itself spontaneously. If this doesn’t help, ovulation stimulators like clomiphene can be used.

You may consult some gynecologist for expert opinion.
