Q: Lower rib cage pain
asked by: DoctorQuestion on December 29th, 2006
My 11 year old daughter is experiencing the following conditions: upper left and right side pain under rib cage (rated 8 on scale of 1-10), hot burning sensations on various parts of her body (neck, leg, arm, back, etc), sharp pains in chest when breathing, occasional vision blurriness accompanied by dizzines, joint, back and shoulder pain, and headaches.

This has been going on for 18 days. I have taken her to our physician 3 times and she has been medicated with antibiotics with no result. Her pain became so unbearable, and after 3 visits to the physician with no diagnosis, I took her to the ER where a cAT scan was performed, nothing was found. They indicated that perhaps she had a bowel backup, but she has been having regular bowel movements. She had blood tests taken with nothing standing out abnormal.

This is a normal, active little girl who has been stricken with constant pain and nothing seems to relieve it. She is constantly complaining, crying, and yelping. She has not been active, but lathargic. She constantly complains of pain, especially the lower rib cage area as indicated above along with the burning sensations.

What can be wrong with her? Nothing on blood test, nothing on cAT scan? She missed 5 days of school prior to Christmas break and I am worried, after 2 more weeks of vacation, that she cannot go back to school, and we dont know what is wrong.

It is very confusing to make sense of all of the symptoms you daughter is experiencing (“upper left and right side pain under rib cage”, “hot burning sensations on her neck, leg, arm, back, etc”, “sharp pains in chest when breathing”, “vision blurriness”, dizziness, joint, back and shoulder pain, lethargy and headaches), especially when all medical investigations (blood tests, CT-scan) are negative. It appears that all those subjective complaints can’t be confirmed with objective physical signs and medical tests. If all tests are normal you may also consider the possibility that your daughter might be lying.
